2008 Apr 23 Confirmed: Midi is off
We've spent the day waiting around for Midi festival organizer Zhang Fan to come out and announce that Midi is officially not going to happen. He hasn't. Apparently he's being interviewed by the New York Times or something. We have, however, spoken to other people involved with organizing the event and they have confirmed, Midi will not be taking place this May.
They emphasize that this is not a cancellation and they're confident that they'll be able to hold the event sometime later this year, possibly over the October National Day holiday period. More news on the new date is likely to emerge soon. Organizers also point out that most of the smaller events associated with Midi, including Mini Midi and all the individual gigs that Midi performers had planned to hold at venues around town, will go ahead. Official after party spots include Yugong Yishan, MAO Livehouse, The Star Live, New Get Lucky, 13 Club, D-22, the Stone Boat, White Rabbit, and the new Boat Bar.
For more info about these shows, see the listings in the May issue (which is out today) of that's Beijing and keep an eye on that's 7 Days e-mail newsletter for updated event information.
Update: The Midi School's BBS is being flooded with messages of support for the festival.
Update 2: 5.30pm, Apr 23: Sina is reporting that the festival is definitely canceled. They say that although Zhang Fan has not made an official announcement, according to local bar owners, many of the out-of-town and foreign bands have already canceled their plans to come to Beijing.

Modern Sky Refund Plan for Advanced Ticket Holders

Since all foreign acts for Modern Sky Music Festival are cancelled, you might want to get some of your money back. Despite the festival will still be held on time at Chaoyang Park, Modern Sky just came out with a refund plan with many options to go.
Modern Sky Music Festival: All International Acts Cancelled
If you're getting all excited about going to Chaoyang Park in the following week to see The Buzzcocks, The Futureheads, British Sea Power, The (Internaitonal) Noise Conspiracy...get ready for the disappointment - all 14 international acts have been cancelled for "unforeseen circumstances". That means half line-ups of the main stage will not be there.
Despite that, The 2009 Modern Sky Music Festival will still be on with two stages putting together to make up for the loss. The organizer is also coming up with a full refund plan which allows people who have already bought the tickets. Stay tune at our website for updates on that.

Party Like it's 1949 - Preview of the Oct 1 Celebration

The parade for the 60th anniversary of the PRC this October 1 is shaping up to be bigger than Ben Hur – or at least the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. CNReviews has provided a good round up of recent coverage in the local press, while the naughty New Yorker has posted some surprisingly dull pirate footage of students rehearsing for the parade – though it’s displayed via YouTube so most Beijingers won’t be able to see it.In with the Music: The InMusic Festival

What may be the last of its kind of the season, the InMusic Festival (Aug 7-9) at the Zhangbei Grasslands (230km outside of Beijing; see photo, right) is a three-day, Woodstock-esque music orgasm with none other than Tricky headlining. Plus, horseback riding, kite flying and a chance to play football with rock stars (Joyside is already registered) … How can you say no? End summer with a bang – or a Bigger Bang, if you want to.
(Ticket prices, transportation options and accommodation info below.)
Here are 25 bands you can catch at InMusic, in no particular order ...
