2008 Jun 12 What's going on tonight? Sexy Beijing on a Boat, A Chinoiserie out of the Old West and Cypher Dynasty

We failed to get two of them into last week's issue of 7 Days, but there are three great events taking place this evening and a thin thread connects all three of them.
At 5pm, New York artist Patty Chang will give a talk over at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in 798. Chang, a 2008 finalist for the Hugo Boss Prize, was also recently featured in the MOMA New Directors series for her work Flotsam Jetsam. According to the Ullen's website, the artist will
give an overview of her work but will primarily introduce A Chinoiserie out of the Old West, the project she is currently working on here in China. Based on a 1928 text written by Walter Benjamin about the Asian American film starlet Anna May Wong, this work will take the form of several short film pieces that deal with representation, translation, mistranslation, and crossed meanings. Chang is in Beijing to film the first segment, which will be shown in late July at the Arrow Factory, Beijing.
Artist Talk: A Chinoiserie out of the Old West
A collaboration between UCCA and the Arrow Factory. RMB 30, students RMB 10.
5-7pm. UCCA Auditorium (6438 6576)

Anna May Wong also happens to have been the subject of one of Sexy Beijing's entertaining short videos. In general, episodes of the show take a light-hearted peek into areas of Beijing life that, unless you actually live here, you're unlikely to find any where else. This evening, the Sexy Beijing team will be presenting a special (and free) screening of short films at the Stone Boat in Ritan Park. Featuring films produced by both the Sexy Beijing folk and other filmmakers. Expect a mix of old favorites and some new material and, who knows, maybe meet Su Fei herself.
Short Film Screening: Sexy Beijing at the Stone Boat
Sit by a lake in beautiful Ritan Park and check out short films by the makers of Sexy Beijing and a handful of Chinese and foreign filmmakers.
Works will include some of the most popular China-focused content from Youtube.com and Tudou.com as well as some world premiers. Free.
9pm. Stone Boat (6501 9986)
One of our favorite episodes of Sexy Beijing (it features a cameo appearance from our magazine) involves Su Fei heading off to the old Yugong Yishan in search of some Beijing bling bling at the monthly Section 6 Hip Hop night that the club hosts. Tonight, Yugong Yishan hosts another hip-hop-flavored night with b-boys and b-girls facing off against each other at Cypher Dynasty.
Cypher Dynasty Vol. 3
B-boys and b-girls face off, along with graffiti visuals, a judges showcase and MC freestyle showcase. Take a look at the Beijing Hip Hop Collective's site for more info and a video of a previous Cypher events here. RMB 800 prize to go to the winner. Beats by DJ Shougo. RMB 35.
8-11pm. Yugong Yishan (6404 2711)

Competition: Cook With Us at the Westin Chaoyang!

Beijing’s hotels have done pretty much all they can to make dining experiences interactive. From the near-ubiquitous open kitchens giving you a distant look at what the cooks are up to, and champagne brunches with chefs slicing tuna, carving roast duck and making omelets at “live cooking stations,” to cooking classes and demonstrations, you’d think there’s not much more they could do.
And yet the Westin Chaoyang has a new idea: cooking for your own private dinner party. The hotel’s “Into the Frying Pan” promotion, which is ongoing throughout June and July and beyond, gives parties of six to ten diners the chance to get into the kitchen at Grange and work with chefs to make their own four-course dinner party: cook your food, then sit down and enjoy it.
the Beijinger December 2010: Shop, Shop, Shop
"S-H-O-P-P-I-N-G, we're shopping" sang the Pet Shop Boys and we listened. Shopping is exactly what we did for the December issue of the Beijinger to bring you a Cover Feature that's jam-packed full of a whole heap of wholesale and specialty markets in the city. There's tips on where to go and when plus handy advice for picking up a bargain. Whether you're after a pig, a poncho, a plate or a plant we've got the lowdown on where you should go down to just in the nick of time for the holiday season.Out Now - the Beijinger November 2010: Lao Beijing Snacks
Grazing is good. Ask cows. Or kangaroos. Three square meals a day is for squares. It's all about snacking. Beijing's got more than its fair share of indigenous snacks and this issue the Beijinger tells you how to get your nibble on the old school way. Pancakes and pastries, buns and broths ... we've eaten our way through all of these snacks for you to feast on our guide to traditional xiao chi. Also in this month's veritable banquet we've got a focus on China's endangered wetlands and how China's youth are fighting climate change. We spoke to Gao Zhenghua, the last bastion of nailao, and we got drunk on fermented duck eggs. We spoke to a environmentalist-turned-cocktail supremo, an electronica maven-turned-restaurateur and we found out who is most certainly not the smartest bartender in Beijing. We decided for ourselves who China's top athlete is, made some noodles and tried shearling on for size and went on a sustainable trip to Mongolia.
