2008 Sep 17 New Openings: Drei Kronen 1308

Beijing’s newest microbrew pub is 700 years in the making: the 1308 suffix denotes the year when the Bavarian brewers began plying their trade, and the time it took for its beer to reach the capital has certainly been worth the wait. The three beers – lager, dark and wheat – are all brewed onsite using ingredients imported from the fatherland, which are combined under the expert eye of a Bavarian brew-master. Such attention to detail is immediately noticeable in the taste (and price: RMB 46-108) of the beers.

The bar itself is huge, comfortably housing 500 souls over three floors and a roof garden. The decoration is styled in keeping with traditional beer halls: wooden paneling, retro advertisements and copper brewing vats. A nice touch is the two suits of armor and costumed waitstaff that remind of the brewer’s history. This huge pub also serves food prepared by a German chef to accompany your drinking. For those disinclined to sample the beers, a full range of other drinks, from soft to spirits, are available. A great location, pub atmosphere and superb beer combine to make this Beijing’s best microbrewery yet, especially with half price beer during the daily happy hour from 5-7pm.

Re: New Openings: Drei Kronen 1308

I went there with a couple of Germans couple of days ago. They said they had never heard about "Drei Kronen 1308" back in Germany. So this is just a promo-move.
The beer was ok - we tried weis bier, tasted like Pauleiner, costed like Pauliner. Talked to the "Bavarian brew-master", he was really friendly. Told us, that the official opening would be during the Oktober Fest.
The place is really spacious (if not too big, I doubt that there are so many germans and other willing to spend that much on the "ok" beer), a little scene gives a hint, that there will be bands playing live music. Almost empty.
What else.. Mm.. Oh! Put more schmalz on your bread, guys! German style!!

Have been there two years ago, almost empty. Today packed and still great beers on tap! Wheatbeer is the best choice!!! Simply Great. A must Go!

Re: New Openings: Drei Kronen 1308

By the way, Germany has about 1300 breweries. Guess nobody knows all of these breweries personally by name... Drei Kronen is located in Franconia (Bavaria) and not a promo-move. Do a research before stating something wrong!

  • Fit For a King: Feast Offers a New All-You-Can-Eat Option

The first thing that strikes you about Feast is that it’s a fine-looking restaurant. Of course, nobody really comes to a place like this to enjoy the design, so it’s just as well that the all-you-can-eat offerings deliver. Mix up your own salad to ease yourself in, and try not to overindulge in the bread and cheese selection – you’re going to need every inch your stomach allows.

With neighbors Temple and Jam already dealing in live music and cocktails respectively, Eje brings a good selection of beer to the table. The choice isn’t as large as at El Nido, but with a focus on Belgian and German brews (Paulaner, Erdinger, Maredsous, Westmalle), there’s enough quality to keep purists amused until they pass out.

With a food menu featuring traditional hearty British fare like fish and chips, bangers and mash (sausages and mashed potatoes to any non-UK readers) and, of course, the great British breakfast, complemented by RMB 50 Guinness and daily happy hours, Little Britain will serve as a welcome alternative for the Lido drinking set.
