2008 Oct 09 Links of the Week: Sim City Beijing and more

For years now we’ve been sending out our weekly 7 Days in Beijing e-mail newsletter on Thursday evenings - although sometimes it doesn't go out until early Friday morning. In every issue of the comprehensive guide to what’s going on in Beijing over the coming week, we also attach a bunch of useful info, the latest reviews and a trivia challenge in the left sidebar. We also include a list of the best links that we’ve come across over the past week. The list below was taken from the bumper two-week October Holiday issue of 7 days. For regular updates on the latest links, subscribe (along with 20,000 others) to the newsletter here or check it out on the site after it’s pasted every Friday at around noon.
Beijing is a city on steroids. Now that the Olympics are over and the development of the city can start to pursue a track that is more related to the needs of its citizens, the non-stop destruction and construction continues. It often feels a lot like Sim City, add an opera house here, a new library there, how about a new airport out there somewhere, maybe four more subway lines there and how about we divert some water from that neighboring province over there. So, although it's not the first site to do it, it seems timely to take a look at this Simcity-style map of Beijing.
We thought we had the scoop on "Midi being delayed again" news (in the end it wasn't at all - but people had given up caring by then), but turns out that Ed Peto beat us to it. Keep an eye on his new site Outdustry for informed commentary on both the Beijing music scene and broader music-related China news including this recent post on the success of Mice Love Rice. Another site to watch for the latest music news is China Music Radar. You can be the first to find out about the Linkin Park cancellation and also Damon Albarn’s Monkey project.

While Sinopop doesn't restrict itself to art (it also takes in Chinese popular culture, film, and books), Lee Ambrozy's site is a great source for understanding what's going on in the rapidly-changing world of the Beijing art scene. Recently she reviewed the Subtlety show currently taking place at Platform China.
Free of Charge has to be one of the best China-related posts I've read online this year. We've added The Foreign Expert to our RSS feed too. It's another welcome addition to the growing group of independent blogs and sites committed to translating and collating interesting and often over looked China-related stories.
We're big fans of James Fallows here at the Beijinger (we interviewed him for the blog back in May), and we enjoyed reading his latest How the West was Wired article in The Altantic. Take a look at the piece first and then you'll understand why we're linking to the West China Story site.
The architecture firm ARUP have been involved in some of Beijing's biggest and most well-known projects. If you can't afford their new book Solutions for a Modern City: ARUP in Beijing, it might be worth having a look round their nifty site.
Subscribe to Inspired's newsletter and get a copy of A Guide to Expat Partners' Opportunities in Beijing.
Some advice from the China Law Practice Blog on how to go about Establishing a Foreign-Owned Restaurant Business in Beijing. The post also appears over China Success Stories.
Hias Gourmet offer information about culinary events and tours around Beijing and beyond. They also offer help to organize both corporate and private events.
AOL have unveiled their Chinese-language website.
Finally, although it's not new and we've linked to it before, new comers to Beijing might be interested in checking out the Freecycle Beijing group hosted on Yahoo. The site bears witness to the "one man's trash is another man's treasure" idiom by giving users a platform to exchange unwanted goods.
For dozens of other links to all things Beijing, subscribe to the 7 Days e-mail newsletter and see the Links of the Week section of the sidebar or take a look at the thebeijinger.com links page. If you’d like to suggest a cool blog, useful site or anything else that we can include in upcoming Links of the Week posts, send an e-mail to 7days@thebeijinger.com.
