Tuesday Film Roundup: The Foreign Films that made it on to Beijing's screens in 2008

Back in July last year, we wrote about the interesting gap between SARFT's (The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television) stated aim of only approving about 20 foreign films for domestic release each year and The Beijing News' report that, in fact, the total amount of domestically-released foreign movies have actually been around 50 in recent years. We took a quick look through our archives and counted a total of 44 foreign films released at Beijing's cinemas in 2008. You can take a look at the full list below. More details about Fan Bingbing's (Cellphone, Lost in Beijing and Taohuayun) latest film, Wheat (麦田Maitian), which is due out this northern summer, were revealed this week. Directed by He Ping (Warriors of Heaven and Earth), you can read all the details here.

Red Cliff II The first installment of Red Cliff broke box office records throughout Asia when it was released earlier this year. John Woo's epic also managed to push Titianic of its perch and now lays claim to being both the most expensive and also the most lucrative Chinese film ever made. A short trailer of the second installment has also been proving popular on video sharing sites.

If You Are the One (Feicheng Wurao 非诚勿扰) Feng Xiaogang's return to the new year comedy tradition that brought him early fame. The talented and popular Ge You is along for the ride too. Many fans of the Feng's early works don't think it quite measures up to his old stuff - but the film is set to overtake Red Cliff I as the most lucrative domestic film ever. With English subtitles. Ip Man (叶问 Ye Wen) The Cantonese action flick is a semi-biographical account of Yip Man (1893-1972), the martial arts master of Bruce Lee and the first to teach Wing Chun, an aggressive, close-range style of combat. “Ip Man” marks Yen’s fourth collaboration with director Wilson Yip, reuniting them with co-star Simon Yam and Sammo Hung who make a cameo appearance and serve as fight choreographers. All About Women (女人不坏 Nv Ren Bu Huai) Tsui Hark's brand new romantic comedy, known as China's own 'Sex and the City', stars Zhou Xun, Zhang Yuqi and Kwai Lun-Mei. Tsui Hark's stylish, hilarious adventure depicts a trendy and contemporary Beijing through three separate encounters in the lives and loves of three modern yet very unique, young women. Lady Cop & Papa Crook (大搜查 Da Sou Cha) Sammi Cheng stars in this new Hong Kong action comedy after three years’ absence from Hong Kong cinema. Cheng plays a police officer assigned to help investigate the kidnapping of the son of a corrupt red diesel kingpin (Eason Chan), thus beginning an unlikely alliance between fellow cops and criminals. Baz Lurhmann's big budget project boasts a stellar cast of Australia's best actors and sublime scenery but despite a huge marketing push around the globe, doesn't seem to have won too many fans.
