2009 Apr 09 New Openings: Suzuki

Japanese regulars flock to Mr. Suzuki’s hidden office building restaurant, which makes smart use of its compact space by accommodating a sizeable sushi bar and five elegant private rooms.

Working in an open kitchen, the chefs turn out a range of tantalizing treats, described in Japanese and Chinese only on the wall-mounted, handwritten menu. They include pickled octopus to whet your appetite, teppanyaki crab, creamy goma-doufu (RMB 30) – a sesame paste tofu that’s a fixture of Japanese Buddhist temple cuisine – and, at the opposite end of the budget and omnivore spectrum, the teppanyaki Kobe beef (RMB 320). To whet your whistle, there’s ice-cold Asahi draft, soju, sake and a range of Japanese spirits.
