2009 Apr 16 New Openings: Massimo Dutti

You’ve already met its sister chain, Zara. Now say hola to Spanish label Massimo Dutti, the classy-not-splashy chain from the Inditex group, Europe’s largest clothing retailer.

Ladies formal wear is found on the first floor, while menswear and a younger, casual womenswear line is featured upstairs, just like at Zara. Prices differ, though. Women’s knit tops cost around RMB 150 at Zara; at Massimo Dutti, a similar piece goes for RMB 439. On the other hand, the quality here is better: no uncut threads, loose buttons and other such sartorial flaws. Our favorites include unadorned, brown suede ballet flats (RMB 860) that look remarkably similar to the design of Tod’s signature Gommino moccasins, as well as a bohemian hand-crocheted bolero (RMB 475), and a smart casual men’s blazer in brown linen (RMB 2,450). The grey-toned store’s fuss-free interior, comfy fitting rooms, and in-house elevator make for a relaxing and thoughtful shopping environment. New collections will rotate in twice a week to keep things fresh.

Massimo Dutti Daily 10am-10pm. BS-33 & BS-31, Solana Mall, 6 Chaoyang Gongyuanlu, Chaoyang District (5905 6920) 朝阳区朝阳公园路6号蓝色港湾BS-33, BS-31

Cold cement benches swathed in woolly pelts. Asphalt floors offset by bronze and mirrored walls. Sleek leather couches made unpretentious by lovingly worn creases. One feels very small at Alexander Wang’s second store in the world, a 4,000sqm space that perfectly captures the brand’s aesthetic contradictions: austere but natural, functional but flattering, and trendy but timeless.

  • Turn Your Swag On: Swag Store

The word that comes closest to capturing its essence is confidence. Short for “swagger,” “swag” is determined by the way you carry yourself: your speech, your gestures and of course your style of dress.

Unless you’ve already tied the knot, you’re likely unaware how starved for options Beijing is for wedding apparel. Overseas returnee Violet Li (and wife of Ed Hung, founder of NLGX Design Store) hopes her first Beijing shop can finally fill the gap between fashion and bridal wear.

While Western luxury brands are currying favor from Chinese consumers left and right, China Fashion Week always serves as a stark reminder that we still have a long way to go. Still, CFW Fall/Winter 2012 – again sponsored by Mercedes-Benz – kicked off to more public interest than ever before on March 24 and concluded with a lavish closing party last Sunday, April 1. A total of 41 fashion shows took place during that time; we have rounded up photos from all the top fashion shows and parties below.
