New Openings: JingZun Peking Duck Restaurant

Chunxiu Lu area residents were saddened when downmarket gem Snack China was converted into this upmarket duck spot. But gentrification is not a zero-sum game.

We lost succulent saozi mian but gained an urbane kaoya dian that will impress business contacts and foreign guests with its traditional furniture, soigné presentation, and tasteful jazz soundtrack (think Nina Simone, not Kenny G). On the menu are Beijing and Shandong specialties, including delicious soft “cloud ears” and sweet, crunchy peppers in a nose-tingling wasabi sauce (RMB 12). And the main event? Despite being served with slightly stodgy pancakes, the reasonably priced duck (RMB 68) was skillfully carved and juicy, its skin crisp, the portion generous with a good meat-skin ratio. It may be hard to admit, but JingZun is a worthy addition to the neighborhood.

JingZun Peking Duck Restaurant Daily 11am-10pm. Bldg 6, Taipingzhuang Nanli, Chunxiu Lu (north of Xingfucun Zhonglu), Chaoyang District (6417 4075) 京尊烤鸭, 朝阳区春秀路太平庄南里6号楼北侧

This place is great - tasty cheap beijing duck - and they deliver (within 2 kms). For half a duck, 2 mains and a soup it was approx 120rmb delivered. Quarter of the price of Duck de Chine. Plus you get the duck bones (great for soup the next day). Whenever I walk by on Chun Xiu Lu, the place is always busy with a mixture of expats (assume) and locals.
