In a city where sheep guts, cow heart and fried silk worms are considered delicacies, there is no shortage of bizarre eats. He are a few of our picks for some of Beijing’s most unusual fare.

 



Guo Li Zhuang

For those who haven’t yet heard that there is a restaurant in Beijing whose cuisine prominently features animal penises, consider this your wake-up call. The Chinese believe that eating the penis and testicles of different animals will improve a man’s libido, cure erection problems and improve kidney conditions. Women are encouraged to partake as well because there are supposed benefits for the skin; ladies, however, are advised to avoid the testicles, as it is believed that consumption will cause general “manliness.” Seizing this rare demand and business opportunity, Guo Li Zhuang offers private dining rooms where one can now enjoy a myriad of different penises on its menu. Specialties include chilli poached water buffalo penis with an array of dipping sauces, deer penis wine and penis hotpot (with all the usual accoutrements plus Tibetan yak penis, cow penis, horse penis, lamb, donkey – you get the idea). 1) Daily 9.30am-2pm, 4.30-9.30pm. 500m west of Dongsishitiao Qiao, south side of the road, Dongcheng District. Wang Pang Zi

Beijing has actual fast food joints (Hello Donkey) that offer various donkey meat entrees - this Gulou area restaurant has been cooking all parts of the donkey and serving it up for at least three generations now. Located at the Drum Tower, Wang Pang Zi’s popular and cheap barbecued donkey meat-stuffed breads often attract queues of people. If you’re in the mood for something heartier, there’s always the donkey meat stew. Daily 9.30am-10pm. 86 Gulou Xidajie, Xicheng District. (8672 7507) 西城区鼓楼西大街86号

 

Wangfujing Donghuamen Night Market
Widely regarded as the Mecca for weird foods in Beijing, Donghuamen Night Market is where the unusual critters are fried up, skewered and served once the sun goes down. Alongside a spread of normal Chinese food such as dumplings, candied fruit kebabs, and noodles, you’ll find a cornucopia of crickets, silk worms, grubs, starfish, baby sharks, scorpions, snakes, and sea horses! All menus are in Chinese and English. Daily 6pm-10pm. Wangfujing Donghuamen Night Market, north end of Wangfujing Dajie, Dongcheng District. 东华门夜市,东城区王府井大街北边
