2009 Jul 02 Agenda Climbs into the Ring
Back in May, we profiled Art of War (mixed martial arts) organizer Conrad Pi; now we get to know two of those actually doing the fighting – Dai Shuanghai and Wang Sai. They’re excited about the upcoming Art of War 13 tournament on 18 July at the Beijing National Olympic Center Auditorium. After reading our interview with the fighters, we think you will be too.
Indian restaurant Ganges now has four locations in Beijing, the newest in The Village at Sanlitun, and in our Spotlights we profile the owner of this increasingly popular establishment, Mumbai native Hetal Hemnani. We also speak with Andromeda Turre, the beautiful voice you hear Monday through Saturday nights at Centro; Turre has worked with Ray Charles and Woody Allen, and received a Grammy nomination in 2008.
Bob Louison honed his bartending skills in one of the nightlife capitals of the world, London; now he shares his craft with the public in his Spirit “It” cocktail making courses. We also profile actress Liu Zi’s side profession – running a Kartell furniture franchise in Beijing’s Grand Summit; we talk to antique expert Roger Schwendeman, and look into the futuristic luxury of Millennium Residences with General Manager Guy Feest.
It’s summer, the season of hedonism. Our Lists detail the best desserts in Beijing and also the best swimming pools – the latter are essential as the annual blast furnace sticks around for a couple more months. In Try These, we look at openings including Tamarind, Invito and Juliette’s, and cover the best events over the next two weeks in our Day-by-Day event listings.

Dominic Johnson-Hill shares the Plastered Experience – how one ‘random idea’ became an iconic brand with global sales, whilst remaining a community project with grassroots values
Hard to imagine now, but only five years ago Nanluogu Xiang was a quiet hutong, where the sighting of a foreigner was worth commenting on. Then Dominic Johnson-Hill opened Plastered, selling high quality t-shirts plastered with iconic Beijing designs. Right time, right place, or insightful entrepreneurship? No one knows, but Dominic must have done something right, as Plastered now has six locations, and the founder himself has become an entrepreneurial icon to many. Here Dominic talks about tapping into the need for local creativity, and the importance of karma and keeping it local.
Check out agenda for the full story on Dominic and Plastered's past.
Meet Philip Tinari, the new director of UCCA

New UCCA Director Philip Tinari discusses the exciting changes ahead for 798’s flagship art venue
First, can you catch us up on how the UCCA is doing? In the four years since it opened UCCA went from an art center in 798 to what many people consider the leading independent art museum in China. In the first three quarters of this year we’ve had over half a million visitors. And when you compare that to numbers around the world it’s really quite impressive. To give you an idea, [New York’s] MOMA is at 3.5 million a year. So, to say that you’re a seventh of that based on a rotating program is really quite a lot. Of course, Beijing is a big city.
