2009 Jul 02 Talking Balls: Promotions, Pregnancies and Punch-ups

Chinese Olympic diving star, Guo Jingjing, and her national teammates have spent their free time modelling. According to leaked photos they have been used to advertise goods for an as yet unnamed electronics company. The star of the Beijing Olympics is a world-class diver but we'll let you decide where on the podium she ranks for making you want to buy electrical goods.

More diving news, and there's no such thing as enough diving news, regards Fu Mingxia. The leaping legend is "suspected to be pregnant" for the fourth time following the release of papparrazzi shots from Hong Kong. Fu already has three children so a fourth will match her haul of Olympic golds.

Brazilian footballer Marcelinho has been linked with a move to the Chinese Super League. The ex-star fo Hertha BSC in Germany is in discussions with Shanghai Shenhua. Luckily, the Shanghai team are one of the richest in the league as the player is demanding USD 1, 000, 000 to play for three months.

Security is rising for tonight's Beijing Guoan vs. Dalian Shide fixture at the Workers' Stadium. Last week in Qingdao, a riot broke out between the supporters of Qingdao Jonoon and Henan Construction. The Qingdao followers accused the visiting fans for hitting home fans and “tearing up a girls clothes”. However, the latter accusation has not been confirmed.

Finally, Yao Ming's broken left foot is not getting any better. His recovery is known to be behind schedule but speculation persists that the big man may be out of the running for the whole 2009/10 season.

Actually, I make it a point to avoid buying any products that are endorsed by Guo Jingjing.

AC Milan beat their city rivals Inter 2-1 to win the Supercoppa Italiana at the Bird's Nest. Second-half goals from Zlatan and Kevin Prince Boateng sealed a comeback from Wesley Sneijder's first-half free kick. The rossoneri were deserved winners but the game may ultimately be overshadowed by the actions of Alexandre Pato. The Brazilian's gesture (shown above) was beamed live on CCTV. The Internet has already started calling for his blood. Whether it's racist or not, it is another addition to a long list of foreign sportsmen behaving inappropriately in China.

  • Football Fever! CSL Fixture List Announced

The preliminary fixture list for the upcoming season of the Chinese Super League has been announced. Beijing Guoan are scheduled to start with a home game against Guangzhou Fuli on the weekend of March 10/11 and then follow it up with an early season grudge match against Shanghai Shenhua on March 16. It doesn't really get any better than Friday nights watching Beijing take on Shanghai under the floodlights - and with their new signings including the likes of Nicolas Anelka and Guoan's Joel Griffiths there's added spice. Come on you greens.

Below are some big games to look out for and Wild East Football have started to list the the full season here. Bear in mind that this is preliminary and subject to change. One factor that will certainly affect it is Beijing's AFC Champions' League progress (or not, based on previous campaigns).

  • Talking Balls: Tennis Trash Talk, Flirting With Footballers & An NBA New Year

Li Na and Zheng Jie are still in the Australian Open. You can spend your week off watching their progress in Melbourne. There are no Chinese men in the tournament. This will change, according to the ATP chief, Brad Drewett. He claims it’s a case of when and not if that China will produce a great male tennis star. That’s what exactly British tennis fans have thought for the last 50-plus years. Silly Brad.

It’s often that heads of sports’ governing bodies make these ill-informed pronouncements about China being on the verge of greatness in a sport that they’ve not yet shown any real aptitude for.
