2009 Jul 30 New Issue Out! TBJ August 2009

It was only a year ago when our fair city hosted that international sports gathering of all sports gatherings otherwise known as the Olympics.

So what has Beijing to show for it?

Plenty of leftover venues, that’s for sure. And while some will continue on to find some purpose in the future, others will likely be ground back into the dust from whence they came. In this month’s cover feature, we examine which venues will go where, and how it concerns you.

And what happened to all those gold medal winners? All 51 one of them? We can’t say for sure, but we can tell you what at least ten of them are up to – or not up to, depending on how you look at it. We also go in-depth into why basketball succeeds and why football fails, and what implications these have on the future of sport in China.

Other than that, you can expect we’ve got all the latest shop, restaurant, bar and club openings happening around the city, as well as interviews with upcoming acts headed this way in August – i.e. Total Science & Riya, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Tricky and Mochipet. Plus, an inside look at the state of Beijing’s skateboarding culture, why you should head to Edinburgh, a chat with Israeli pianist Gil Shohat, swinging singer Dizzy Hemmy and her crew of Chinese Hellcats, the secret behind the latest line by local designer Liu Lu, and who Fashion 5-0 snap catching the summer waves in style.

All that and more in the latest issue of the Beijinger!

  • St. George’s Day Dinner: Tickets on Sale Now!

It’s time to put on that fancy suit, laugh loud and dig deep for a good cause. The St. George’s Day Dinner is hitting the Beijing scene on April 28 at The Westin Beijing Chaoyang. This year, the proceeds will go towards Care for Children (an English charity dedicated to finding foster homes for orphaned children) as well as Little Flower (an independently funded hospice which offers long-term intensive care and medical treatment to sick and chronically ill Chinese children). We asked co-founder Martin Budzinski to clarify who exactly is St. George and why dinners are sometimes better than balls.

  • Back of the Net: ClubFootball 5-a-side Returns!

China ClubFootball and the Beijinger are both a healthy ten years old, but only one of us can make any real claim to be healthy. ClubFootball has been at the forefront of Beijing grassroots football – getting the city's men, women and children, both local and foreign, to play the beautiful game. Meanwhile, we've been encouraging you to go to bars and restaurants. One nil to ClubFootball. The spring season of their Men's 5-a-side Leagues kicks off next month and they are looking for new teams and individuals to sign up.

  • Land on Nuandao: Holiday Pop-up Store Today in Gulou

Nuandao first hit our radar last month, when it drew massive hipster crowds to its creative party of pop-up stores. The bilingual Beijing-based design blog has been quietly operating for about six months, publishing regular content on local brands, designers and events, while racking up quite a loyal fan base (350,000 followers on China’s Tumblr, DianDian, to be exact).

Yesterday, Nuandao announced its official soft launch to the public for the first time. The new-and-improved website also features e-commerce services. According to the press release, we can expect a carefully curated selection of well-designed products, some exclusive to Nuandao and “handpick[ed] for their authenticity, originality and style.”

  • Man Chops Off 9 Inches for Charity

A man who hadn’t gotten a proper haircut in over ten years was coerced to do so last month at TATA Salon.

What would you do if your office (in this case, ThoughtWorks Software Technologies) ganged up on you, raising over RMB 15,000 for a child-in-need on the terms that you chop off those long locks? This guy, Vincent Xu, cracked under the pressure and handed himself over to TATA Salon stylist Scarlet's scissor-ready hands.
