2009 Aug 04 Dishrag Days

The gleeful gloating about how Beijing's improved air quality and climate from earlier this summer has been hit with a cold (or rather dingy) dose of reality.

Aside from an occasional glimpse of sunshine, the weather in our fair city has been mostly on the steamy side over the past few weeks - a relatively normal condition for this time of year, but a marked contrast from those wonderful blue skies all the same.

If you're looking for a break from all the muggy murkiness, the Beijing Youth Daily has some bad news: Weather conditions are expected to stay much the same throughout the week and may even worsen.

The article also explains how the lack of an influx of colder air has created a "relatively stable air structure and weak updraft" (in other words, no wind) that has trapped "water vaporized from the surface and car exhaust at low altitudes," hence the smog - I mean "fog."

The humidity index has averaged between 65 to 70 percent over the past five days, with the maximum measured humidity level at a brow-wiping 85 percent, and the average daily highs has been at around 30 degrees Celsius.

Possible showers on the 5th and 6th may offer a bit of a respite, but expect things to get right back to dank for the rest of the week.

Re: Dishrag Days

I hope the weather never changes. Changes in weather signify changes in time, and I don't want time to move any faster.

That being said, let's get this air cleaned up. It's gross. It's like putting your mouth on the rear exhaust of the 437 bus.

Love,

It’s been a foggy (and unusually damp) week in Beijing, which has had the unfortunate effect of locking in all that lovely air pollution, pushing the US Embassy’s air particle index up past the 400 (dangerous) mark for the past three days. State news agency Xinhua, however, says relief is on the way.
