Get out of the rain and into a gallery!

A rainy weekend ahead means it’s nice to stay indoors, but may I suggest staying indoors at a gallery?

Iberia Center for Contemporary Art at 798 is holding a weekend of film in honor of the late dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch. Today brings two highlights – the 2001 video Dance with Farm Workers at 1.45pm and a 1975 film of Bausch’s superb version of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring at 2.50pm. The former is particularly inspiring. It tells the story of what happens when ten professional performers work together with 30 Sichuan farm workers to create a dance performance. This video has become a mini classic of the film festival circuit and it’s not hard to see why.

While you’re at Iberia, check out the photos of Han Lei. Han likes to work with the camera like a magician, “to collect the strange feelings hidden at the bottom of my heart” to create a new reality. His work is eccentric and enjoyable, yet disquieting too.

But, if you like your photography straight, don’t miss the opening at 4pm today of Pulitzer prize winning photojournalist Liu Heung Shing’s “Seek Truth from Facts” at the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Caochangdi. This exhibition is timed to coincide with the release of the first Chinese edition of Liu's classic book of China reportage China After Mao in September this year. The photos document a time of extraordinary change in China from the death of Mao in 1976 to 1983. The exhibition runs till October 19, so you don’t have to go today. But if you do you may get the chance to meet the photographer himself and openings at Three Shadows are never boring.
