2009 Aug 20 Papers Please! Security Tightens in Lead-up to Oct 1

If you haven’t registered your place of residence with the local boys in blue, now might be a good time. China Daily carried an article yesterday warning of stringent security in Beijing during the National Day celebrations in the first week of October, with “anti-terror efforts” likely to reach “a higher level than was seen during the 2008 Olympic Games.”
The article also warns, “Police will visit communities to check on short-term residents, with an emphasis on meeting people from ethnic groups and expatriates.”
So register now and save yourself hassles in the coming weeks.

There was a time when they would come around to document some of the weirdest things along with checking for my registrations. I wonder if they will really come back around to check my shoe size again.

I've stopped answering the door when they come to check my papers.

Police officers Push American resident to get into his home
I live with a few chinese students. recently moved there and the landlord is not the real land lord. This is apartment complex is filled with foreigners and a hot spot for them at this time.
A man slid a piece of paper under my door telling me to call there. I didnt call them because i thought there english would be horrible and they would just come back.
So, 2 days later they come back at 9 pm at night! A chinese student opened our door. Went to get me and when I got to the door the police man saw me and pushed his body into me to get inside the home. I didnt allow him in. He was very angry with me for not budging. He began to yell and I began to yell. I told him police in foreign countries cant push there way into a home without proper papers. He said but were in China. I said well China has to change these rules. or one day someone will be more unhappy than I.
This man literally pushed me to get into my home without asking for my passport. Than when He asked for my passport I told him no. i was of course planning to give it to him but now he had more reason to mess around and use his power.
I said i would go get my passport and he could not step in my home but they wanted to continue to question me as I stood there asking weird questions.
After they got me angry they asked me questions trying to instigate me to say something bad about China. Seems they have a special way of interogation.
The thing I disagree with here is no police officer should push a man to get into his home.
Where is the respect for foreigners in this situation. Where are the laws. Where is the structure. If us foreigners want respect we need to come together. Also, they are wanting money and "taxes" etc,
Ive been in china 2 years i know what its like to be ripped off in a legal way.
Anyone else willing to comment on this...id like to hear it all. Say bad or good about my comments, i dont care, just speak.
these police officers dont respect the privacy of your homes. The national holiday is just another reason for them to burst into our homes. This government should Just tell the community the truth..
they are trying to lift there standards of security. But dont you dare push me to get into my home. I will use all my power to not let you in my home, no matter what it takes. Especially if you push me.
All of my papers were taken. this article is right, donate your papers to a-holes wanting to abuse there power. I cooperated with the people who respected my home.

SportsTrainers - What do you mean "all of my papers were stolen"? They took your passport? That sounds illegal. I'd call your embassy about it.

Maybe you just live in a dodgy/cheap part of town. My local police have been nothing but polite and when I had an issue once with someone else - they called in the "Foreign Police" from the Ritan Park station who speak perfect English to make sure that nothing got messed up.
I agree that respect must always be given - but why are security guards at clubs such dicks? Because they have to deal with drunk arse holes all the time. Same too for police in more run down parts or town. They deal with low class or argumentative people all the time.
Not an excuse. Just a possible explanation.
