2009 Sep 15 Kicking A*se, with Softness - Martial Arts in Beijing

Combat has been around as long as time, and the East has given the world some of its more graceful techniques. Often shrouded in mysticism and linked with a code of honor, these martial arts are known to instill discipline as well as deadly force. Use what you were born with to get all Jackson Pollock over the canvas that is your opponent’s body.

Muay Thai
Literally translated as “Thai boxing,” the style is known as “The Art of Eight Limbs” for its use of the knees and elbows in addition to hands and feet. Provides outrageous physical conditioning.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
Developed in Brazil, funnily enough, after the “art of softness,” or “way of yielding” arrived there from Japan. Its ground style has made it a staple of Mixed Martial Arts competition.

Beijing Jiujitsu Academy. Rm 505, 5/F, Bldg 5, Kaixuancheng, 170 Beiyuan Lu, Chaoyang District (5129 5028, 138 0137 8214) www.baxiroushu.com 朝阳区北苑路170号凯旋城5座5层503室

Judo
They say “The Gentle Way” makes you grow. Do so by following founder Dr. Kano’s directives of allying “maximum efficiency” with “mutual benefit.”

Seidokan Beijing. Mon-Thu 9am-10.30pm, Sat 9am-10.30am. German Embassy School Beijing, 49A Liangmaqiao Lu, Chaoyang District (135 2184 7587) www.judobeijing.com 朝阳区亮马桥路49号德国使馆学校

Kendo
The modern “way of the sword” is based on traditional Japanese swordsmanship, which may well come in handy at 3am in Sanlitun. Or not.

Beijing Kendo Club (call for schedule). 3-1 Liangmaqiao Lu, Chaoyang District (139 1177 1871) 朝阳区亮马桥路3-1号

Wing Chun
Made famous by Bruce Lee. Some lineages say that Wing Chun was created to be used on slippery surfaces like boats, and was actually developed on a traveling opera boat. Ideal for women and the small of stature.

Wing Chun Kung Fu class. Group, private and in-house classes available in and around Chaoyang District. Lessons can be taught in English, Chinese, German or Italian. Contact Lee Kwan Wah (131 2655 3900, wingchun.china@gmail.com)

Re: Kicking A*se, with Softness - Martial Arts in Beijing

that's a sad little blog post you got there man..

not even one northern Chinese martial art listed. in fact, only one Chinese martial art...

softness? where's the tai chi?

kicking a*s? where's the san da?

do your homework. don't just trawl the classifieds section of this website...

Re: Kicking A*se, with Softness - Martial Arts in Beijing

Yes - sad, indeed, if it were intended to be a comprehensive list of exclusively Chinese martial arts, which it was not.

Rest assured, a more comprehensive list will be in an upcoming agenda and on this site very soon.

Hello dear readers....I am LeeKwanWah and I teach Wing Chun...I am somewhat surprised to see my contact info here listed ....I NEVER POSTED THIS AD!!!...also...that is not me in that picture...doing that odd move.

I teach traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu...from a genuine lineage....i have nothing to do with Kicking ass or Marshmellow Kung Fu...I do my own thing - in my own way.

My ad is on the beijinger too - under the health section.

With the martial arts come the controversies. Smile

bobby_liu: I challenge you to a duel. You better prepare because I'm gonna kick your balls to the wall!

It's better to be nice, kind, generous, friendly, helpful, sexy and rich than to be obnoxious, scary, stinky, stingy, lonely and poor.

  • The Best Way to Enjoy Crab Dumplings

Crab dumplings, or xiefen xiaolongbao (蟹粉小笼包) in Chinese, gather all the flavors of crab and pork into one ball of dough.

Technically, xiefen is a general term encompassing xierou (蟹肉 crab meat), xiehuang (蟹黄 golden roes) and xiegao (蟹膏 fatty sperm). This trio goes well with pork, especially with a certain portion of fat. Along with these, a chunk of head cheese is a key ingredient, dissolving into liquid form and drawing the essence out from the solid fillings.

  • TAKE 5: Kidney Bean Sweets

    Caffè iI Sole 太阳咖啡

Coffee Nerikiri (煉り切り) is a typical traditional Japanese sweet. The coffee-flavored kidney bean layer is as dense as a brownie, a nice contrast to the snow-white sweet bean paste stuffing. It can be a bit oversweet, but the equally sugary-voiced waitress explains that it was originally paired with green tea in the Japanese tea ceremony.

    Mojito

Very macho, that Hemingway. Shooting, fishing, bullfighting, womanizing … but drinking a minty highball? Centro is a long way from Papa’s more adventurous moments, but it’s unlikely the bearded one would object to their quality mojitos.
