2009 Sep 15 Tajine Scene: The new El Wajh at Face

The rich, aromatic flavors of the Tajine – stewed dishes prepared in eponymous cone-shaped portable ovens made from glazed earthenware – highlight the new Moroccan menu at Face Beijing. Prepared for several hours over a simmering fire, subtly spicy flavor is infused into the food as the conical lid retains moisture in the dish.
El Wajh, which shares the same ornate dining space as Face’s northern Indian restaurant Hazara, offers an assortment of tajines made from lamb, chicken, fish or vegetables ranging in price from RMB 88-128. An assortment of couscous dishes (RMB 98 for vegetable couscous, RMB 138 for beef) and appetizers ranging from hummus (RMB 45) and zaalouk salad (RMB 45) to seafood briwates (RMB 60) and harira soup (RMB 45) round out the menu.
For our visit we tried the Harira soup (RMB 45) – a delicious lentil and tomato soup served with a wedge of lemon – and the Tajine d’Agneau aux Pruneaux (RMB 128). The latter consisted of a leg of lamb served with potatoes, sliced peppers and a stewed prune sprinkled with sesame seeds. While the sauce, with its tumeric and parsley accents, had us wiping the plate clean with piping hot pita bread, the tender mutton could have used a bit more time simmering over the fire for even more infused flavor.
The meal – which we enjoyed in the serene (albeit mosquito-ridden) confines of Face’s charming outdoor patio – was satisfying nonetheless and makes El Wajh worth a try.

New live music venue Temple opened last Friday at 206 Gulou Dongdajie. I didn’t make it along to the opening party, but heard the place was packed out with a strong, French-heavy crowd (one of the owners is former Salud man Clement Berger). Unfortunately, the live music only lasted about 30 minutes, as the police showed up to shunt the band off the stage, but the party continued anyway. Michelin Myths and Legends in Beijing
The words “Michelin star” are becoming more and more prevalent around Beijing’s dining scene. Not that the city has any Michelin-starred restaurants – we’ll need a Beijing Michelin Guide before that’s a possibility. With Michelin Guides available for Hong Kong and Macau, a mainland edition might not be too far off, but for now it’s an increasingly regular stream of visiting Michelin-starred chefs who are bringing star power to Beijing dining.
Inagiku: Yet More Japanese Fine Dining
Established in Tokyo in 1866, Inagiku expands its international network of restaurants with this first Beijing branch. Subtle orange lighting softens the mood, while a Swarovski chandelier hanging above the bar area illuminates the 1,500sqm space, which features 11 elegant VIP rooms. Nineteen set menus (RMB 180-1,050 for lunch, RMB 350-1,980 for dinner) and the a la carte menu (RMB 48-3,880) are dominated by top-end ingredients and seasonings imported from all around the world – everything from Wagyu beef and Hokkaido hairy crab to Australian lobster, Italian black truffles and French caviars.
Citrus Central: Lime Thai Opens in the CBD
Run by the same culinary team as now-defunct Sanlitun spot this vibrant cafe remedies the lack of Thai food at Central Park. Thai chef Mac Boonrit’s menu is dominated by classic Thai dishes, with a few inspired twists such as the spicy tuna salad – toned down, of course, for those with Western taste buds who reside in the nearby apartments.
Cleared for Takeoff: My China at Terminal 3
My China offers a collection of cuisines from China’s spiciest culinary regions – Sichuan and Hunan – as well as a range of classic Beijing dishes. Chefs hailing from those regions ensure authenticity, scaling the quality up with organic ingredients. Three levels of spiciness are indicated by the number of green chilli symbols beside the name of a dish; red chillis are a guide to the “authenticity” of the dish.
