2009 Sep 28 Holiday Road Closure & Other Shutdown News

More details have been published of road restrictions and shutdowns during the National Day holiday. Nothing unexpected, but here is the rundown.

First up, we have unconfirmed reports that Jianguomen Dajie will be closed on September 30. It seems a fairly safe bet that the road will be closed at least late in the day, as authorities prepare for the military parade October 1.

Businesses along Chang'an Avenue have been told to close on September 30.

Over 7,000 traffic police will be deployed in Beijing on the big day, so don't even think about driving unless you absolutely have to.

It has been announced that the following roads will be closed to all vehicular traffic throughout the holiday (October 1-8):

The roads immediately circling the Forbidden City.

The east and west sides of Tiananmen Square.

The roads around Jing Shan Park (aka Coal Hill Park ), immediately behind the Forbidden City.

China Daily reports today that the Forbidden City, the Tiananmen rostrum, and the Great Hall of the People would all close at 3pm tomorrow (Tuesday, September 29). The Forbidden City will reopen Friday morning (October 2), while the Great Hall will be shut until October 6.

China Daily also states the renovated China National Museum on the eastern side of Tiananmen Square will finally reopen, free of charge, on Oct 3.

Trucks will also be restricted from zones around the Olympic Green in the city’s north, but we presume few of our readers were considering driving semi-trailers into Beijing over the break.

As most Beijingers would be aware, private vehicles have generally been restricted from entering the inner city once a week since the Olympics, based on license plate numbers. The Transportation Control Department announced on September 23, however, that no restrictions on private cars will be in place during the holidays. Apart from the fact, of course, that many roads in the city’s south will be shut.

Some foreigners have also been stopped on the street today (September 28) and asked for their passports. Inspect a high level of scrutiny over the next week.

Opposite House on Sanlitun has announced the following opening hours for the holidays.

Sureño: Closed October 1-8, reopening 8 for dinner.
Bei: Closed October 1-4.
Punk: Closed October 1 & 6th, open October 2, 3, and 7.
Mesh: Open.
Cafe: Open.

Re: Holiday Road Closure & Other Shutdown News

Cant buy a knife anywhere.... the woman at walmart said no knives until Oct 8 after the holiday. I just want to get a knife to spread peanut butter on my bread...

I googled "Cant find knife in beijing" and yes they were removed from all stores.... apparently 2 dead and 14 injured in knive attacks at Qianmen on the 21st of Sept! 2nd attack in two days.... Another good reason to stay at home these days.... although this could happen anywhere... generally I feel safe in Beijing

I, for one, feel much safer knowing that butter knives are off the streets!

The slab of butter in my refrigerator concurs!

Unless someone gets beaten to death with a spoon, use the back of one of those.
