2009 Oct 12 Capital Bites: Fatburger & New Element Fresh

You voted it “Restaurant of the Year” in our 2009 Restaurant Awards; now the Shanghai chain brings its healthful brand of crayfish salads, laffa bread wraps and “flu-fighter” smoothies to the north end of restored Qianmen Avenue. If you plan to visit between today and Friday 16th October, take a printed copy of this blog post with you to claim a free small juice with any salad purchase.

Despite excited clamoring on the Beijinger forum, cult US chain Fatburger has been slow to touch down in the capital. But we can now confirm (thanks to a tip-off from the project’s construction manager) that your recurring dream (or nightmare judging by the pic below) of an XXXL Triple King will soon be a reality. When we know more, so will you.

Continuing the Yankee theme, we’ve heard that Chef Too owner Billy will be opening “The Grill”, a high-end American restaurant with a Californian touch and a “known or grown” food policy. So look out for heirloom veggies in The Village at Sanlitun’s new north section in December.
Downtown, A host of multi-themed eateries have opened in the Prosper Centre (next door to the Kerry Centre Hotel), taking care of all your working lunch needs. There’s a “classic” English pub with a wonderful deck, two Cantonese restaurants, an Italian, Vietnamese, Japanese teppanyaki and more. Photos and reviews coming soon.

Bar of the Month: Union

Although we’re big fans of the “and Grille” part of Union Bar and Grille, there’s nothing we like more than a seat at the bar, a happy hour pint and a handful of their complimentary salty chips. Led by the ever-affable Andy Bright, Union’s staff is also top-notch.

Fatburger is fantastic, probably my second favorite chain burger in the world. Hopefully they won't be greedy and charge Let's prices.
ETA: 2013. Given recent history on "coming soon" ...
Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

I've got high hopes for this one... A friend of the mag is involved with the construction management, and he is on his way to Beijing this week to start the project. I'll try to get regular updates from him on progress / problems etc. I have a vested interest ... I want some chilli cheese fat fries.

According to dianping.com post three days ago still nothing. I should expect it'll take at least a couple more weeks even if they decide to start construction immediately.
