2009 Oct 22 Weekend Live Music Roundup: Beyoncé comes to town, Arch Enemy headbanging and Midi turns 10

The weekend feels shorter after the week-long holiday, but here are three shows worth checking out (or to miss) over the coming weekend.

Oct 23, Friday

Beyoncé Knowles
Of course, the big one is Beyoncé Knowles at Wukesong Arena on Friday. Buy your tickets at 6417 7845. RMB 288-1,688. 8pm. Wukesong Arena (6828 6386)

Arch Enemy
If you are not so excited about Beyoncé (it happens), check out the Swedish melodic metal band Arch Enemy at The Star Live on the same night. RMB 280-680. 8pm. The Star Live (6425 5677)

Oct 23-24, Friday-Saturday

The Midi Music Festival Tenth Anniversary
The longest-running music festival in China celebrated its tenth birthday at Zhenjiang in May, now it's coming back to the capital. Although it’s not an outdoor festival, a concert at 798 Art Factory has the same cool factor.

The line-up features some of the most influential bands and artists of China’s rock scene, including The Verse, Suffocation, Twisted Machine and Yeska on Oct 23, CMCB, TOOKOO, Brain Failure, Muma & Third Party, SUBS, Miserable Faith and Xie Tianxiao on Oct 24.

Apart from the performances, Midi School will also host the first The Chinese Rock Awards. Read more about this here and see the nomination list here.

You can buy advance tickets at 400 610 3721 or pay the door price on the day. RMB 80 (per day), RMB 50 (advance); RMB 100 (two days), RMB 80 (advance). 6pm-1am (Oct 23), 3pm-midnight (Oct 24). 706 Factory House (inside 798 Art District, 5130 5569)

As the buzz surrounding the approaching music festival season reaches fever pitch, it’s becoming increasingly hard to stymie the flow of confirmed and mostly unconfirmed news we hear.

One of the more interesting snippets that could help Midi Festival to score points on its well-armed rivals this holiday weekend is that one festival sponsor, namely skater giant Vans, is set to bring its distinct brand of hip street style to Midi revelers.

  • Win Tickets To Strawberry Music Festival

There’s a little of something for everyone this Labor Day holiday weekend. Metal heads can thrash out at MIDI (with a dollop of hip-hop provided by the artist formerly known as Mos Def). If folk music is your fancy, you can get along to Ditan Park for their yearly bash. And if you’re the indie-loving hipster-type, the annual summer soiree Strawberry Music Festival goes ahead in Tongzhou courtesy of Modern Sky.

As the music festival season fast approaches, there are a clutch of major events to note in your diaries.

From the five major music festivals slated for the summer, we’re set to be treated to a fair assortment of top international acts in addition to the usual stable of strong local outfits.

  • Weekend Nightlife: Fatboy on Great Wall

No doubting where the biggest party of this weekend is – it’s the much anticipated Great Wall Music Festival featuring ‘90s UK dance legend Fatboy Slim out near Badaling. I’d bet on a crowd-pleasing set of dance floor classics, with a healthy dose of Fatboy’s own best-known tracks (hopefully not anything he produced after about 2000, though). Let's get one thing straight: The party's not on the Wall, just beside a section of it, though you can go for a walk up during the day if you're so inclined.
