2009 Nov 25 Cafe Food Fight Winner!

Our Café Food Fight has really come to the boil this week, with our list of top-rated places radically redrawn. This is how things looked last week:
1. Panino Teca
2. Panino Giusto
3. Sculpting in Time
4. Village Cafe
After a week of Food Fighting, Comptoirs de France has come out of nowhere to steal the top spot, while Café Zarah has slipped into third place. It’s good to see one of the Gu Lou cafes making it into the top five. Meanwhile, Panino Giusto has slipped down to fourth place – a reaction, it seems, to mixed service levels.

5. Sculpting in Time
Our winning review this week comes from David_Pennbrook, with his assessment of the student favorite Sculpting in Time:
A little piece of Haidian heaven
“As a university student Sculpting in Time is truly a God-send. The atmosphere is so relaxing. One can snuggle up on the overstuffed chairs and sofas while sipping away on expertly crafted drinks. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating, never rushing you out or trying to make you hurry. Sculpting in Time gives most American coffee shops a run for their money.”
David_Pennbrook wins a copy of Beijing by Foot, the guide to 40 walks around our fair city through unique hutong alleyways, traditional courtyard homes and princely estates.

The oil’s been flying in our Peking duck food fight this week, but users seem to be at one when it comes to the good, the bad and ugly in Beijing’s Peking duck scene. Our top four Peking duck restaurants as rated by users (based on places with three or more reviews) remain the same:Potential Crowd Pleaser: Cafe of Sydney

From the outside, Cafe of Sydney looks like the kind of “Western” option you might consider a life-saver … if you lived in Datong.
Solid and Satisfying: The Bistro Opens at Ritan Park

Between quality sandwiches, lunch sets (RMB 39) and deliveries starting this month, The Bistro should be popular among Ritan-area residents and embassy staff. A canny approach to wine cuts out the markup – with a number of bottles in the RMB 100-150 range, you could easily make a habit of stopping here after work.
Toasting Hot: Warm Your Insides, One Swig at a Time

Beijing temperatures plummet to as low as -20˚ degrees Celsius in the coming months, but don’t let the cold get in the way of your fun. Agenda shows us the best palces to grab a pal and warm up on the hot drink specials all around town instead.
Silly Name, Succulent Burgers: Laowai's Lounge Opens in Wudaokou

This campus-style café-bar suffers from a surprisingly unimaginative approach to design. The long bar area is pleasing enough, but seating is arranged in unnecessarily rigid lines, and Mao posters are haphazardly thrown about to cover bare red walls.
