2009 Nov 26 The World Can Be Saved! Hope in a Changing Climate Screening
This Friday, Greening the Beige, is holding the premiere screening of Hope in a Changing Climate. Directed by Jeremy Bristow of the BBC Natural History Unit, the film is part of the Earth’s Hope documentary series. The 30-minute English-language documentary demonstrates that ecosystems that have been gradually degraded over large areas and over long periods of time can be rehabilitated.
Through examples of successful projects in China, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and the US, it shows how the return of nature can significantly help to alleviate poverty and reduce our impact on climate change. The film will be simultaneously aired by BBC World and will also be shown at the climate change summit in Copenhagen early next month.
Starting at 8pm, there will be a Southwestern Chinese fusion buffet, followed by the film screening at 9pm and a panel discussion. Guest panelists include Peter Harris from www.hotglobe.org, John Moore, chief scientist from Beijing Normal University, and Peter Sallade of the New Beijing International Film Fest.

Yes, I know, “greening” is not a correct use of the present continuous tense. However, Greening the Beige is a wordsmith’s eccentricity used to encapsulate a project I started back in 2007. The name is no less a play on words than its Chinese translation: 点废成绿 (dian fei cheng lv), derived from a well known chengyu reminiscent of “turning over a new leaf”, and most cleverly transformed into “it’s time to turn the city’s trash into green.”
