2009 Dec 04 Ugg Boot Home Truths from Down Under

The truth had to come out some time. And now someone has finally come out and said it. Sorry girls, but Australians all over the city are quietly sniggering at your ugg boots.
Earlier this week The Global Times carried a piece by Jennifer Eden – presumably the same Eden who presents the weather on CCTV9 – entitled: “Ugg boots on the outside, far beyond a fashion faux par.”
Setting aside the glaring spelling error in the headline (note Global Times sub-editors, it’s a major faux pas to think French or English phrases are spelt as they are pronounced), the article spells out a few home truths from down under.
Eden writes: “Ugg boots are beautifully comfortable twin-faced 100 percent Australian merino sheepskin boots. They are soft and nurturing, designed to be worn with barefeet to maximize snuggly warmth, they are like slippers. To be worn indoors. Only.
She continues: "Due to a variety of factors, not the least the obvious fact that they are extremely unattractive, (the generic name Ug and brand name Ugg were derived from the word "ugly," seriously) the wearing of Uggs outside [in Autralia] was strictly forbidden…Doing so would immediately place you in the category of complete loser and you would be instantly cast out of any social group… with little hope of return.”
So there you have it girls. Sorry.

You can read all about the history of ugg boots, including spurious claims by New Zealanders that they invented the things, here.

Footwear Fashion 5-0

Remember when you went to school? Your sneakers could be the cause of much upset if you didn’t have the “right” pair. Thing is, things don’t really change. People are still going to notice and comment on your choice of footwear. On the upside, Beijing is not gangland, so there’s no risk that those shoes your mum picked out could get you shot.

Fashion 5-0: Bring Out the Animal in You
Thanks to the fashion bible that is the Calgary Sun, we found out that animal prints are “in” this season. Not just in the greater Alberta area, or even Canada at large (although both are fashion hothouses, that’s for sure). Beijing, too, is in on the craze with prints that are wilder than a box set of Animals Say The Funniest Things (which is also popular in Canada).

Fashion 5-0: Follicle Folly
Hair. It’s more than a controversial musical. It’s a way of life. How else do you explain the plethora of hairdressers in Beijing? If they aren’t cutting hair, then what could they possibly be doing? No matter. What’s clear is that a bit of mousse and expert tousling can swing you over the fine line between fool and cool.

Fashion 5-0: Beijing Unmasked

Beijing isn't all "blue sky days." Sometimes it's pretty, erm, foggy here. That's when you need to cold rock a mask. Just don't mention swine flu.

wow, fashion tips from a guru
1.3 billion souls, lend him your ears
what about bogans, mate? Such a style consultant as yourself must surely know that the uggies (UGH BOOTS) have been the first preference amongst illiterate, illegitimate, irrelevant Australians since the early 70's. Like a cream of corn jaffel, you rise to the top of this bunch.
Trackies (must be black), flannel shirt (pop the collar at your peril) and ugh boots are the only uniform any useless drongo would think of wearing down to the tuck shop to get a carton of winnie blues for the morning stubbie. In "winter" that is.
Almost as ocker as rooting your mum in the back of my Sandman.

Members of the Beijing Aussie Rules FC would never laugh at the chicks of our great city who choose to wear uggies. We 100% support the wearing of this great piece of footwear throughout the winter months, as long as its made of 100% Aussie merino. Don't be fooled into purchasing the inferior Kiwi product.
Other BARFC officially endorsed female footwear includes thongs (ie rubber sandles/flip flops, not g-strings...although we don't have a problem with them either), blunnies or ridiculously high black vinyl CFMBs.
Long live the Uggy!

I like how they are 10-20 AUD back home and come on a shelf held together with a plastic ring. Here they are 1-2-3K RMB and are boxed like some rare truffles.. :-s
