2009 Dec 12 44 Dim Sum Dishes - Chao Dian Opens in the Village

Decorated in red leather and dark wood, the softly lit two-story Chao Dian in The Village at Sanlitun offers delectable Hong Kong style fare with quick and attentive service.
The 44-dish dim sum menu (RMB 6-18) features all the usual favorites. The steamed BBQ pork buns (RMB 16) are heartily filled, while the steamed rice roll with shrimp (RMB 16) is equally scrumptious. If you can’t decide, order the house platter – shao-mai, shrimp, Shanghainese and vegetable dumplings – for RMB 48.
The regular menu is also well stocked, with no dish exceeding RMB 48. The steamed egg with dried scallops (RMB 38) is light and savory, while the assorted brined meats with jellyfish (RMB 48) are lush and flavorful.
Open late, Chao Dian is great for a quick affordable bite to satisfy any Cantonese craving.

For a tasty, textured treat, start with the black fungus appetizer (RMB 32), served in a frozen ice bowl, smacking with lime juice, garlic, vinegar and cilantro. From there the thin, crispy scallion pancakes (RMB 25) nicely complement the creamy Malay beef brisket curry (RMB 69) – perfectly cooked chunks of tender meat, potatoes and bell peppers, which arrives simmering in a hot cooker. Located at the top of Qianhai lake, in Houhai, this restaurant offers palatable Yunnan cuisine, to go with a stunning view of the lake. Predominantly wooden furnishings compose the minimalist decor, while service is friendly and helpful. The hand-written, hand-sewn menu presents a varied sampling of Yunnan dishes, such as the traditional steamed clay pot chicken (RMB 48), with rich, hearty mingling flavors of chicken meatballs, mushrooms and melon, and old Kunming’s braised beef (RMB 58), which provides a tasty kick of spice balanced with refreshing mint and spinach leaves.
