2010 Jan 29 Boulder-sized Orbs of Juicy Pork - Guo Jia Cai restaurant

Guo Degang, one of China’s most famous cross-talk comedians, has done what any self-respecting celebrity does in Beijing: open a restaurant. Housed in Guo’s own theatre (De Yun She), the attractive teahouse-like space offers a wide spectrum of popular Chinese cooking, with several dishes linked to Tianjin, his native city.

Worth trying are the Tianjin potstickers (RMB 20), filled with shrimp, egg, leek and fennel, and Guo’s “Smashed Meatball,” (RMB 58), a solitary, boulder-sized orb of juicy pork, herbs and spices. The house special, “Imperial Decree” (圣旨到), is an mpressive show of creativity and skill: clams and black beans presented as calligraphy on tofu skin “paper,” with cucumber carved into the shape of a jade paper-roller.

Daily 11.30am-2pm, 5-9.30pm. Inside De Yun She Theatre, 4 Gongti Donglu (opposite Yashow Market), Chaoyang District. (6592 8816/7) 朝阳区工人体育场东路4号德云社内(雅秀对面)

  • Kunming Dreaming: Private Yunnan Cuisine in Little Dongcheng

Restoring siheyuan into hidden, fashionable must-visit hotspots seems to be something of a trend in this city. Beyond the Susus and Great Leaps of Beijing, there is Wuchanju. Socked a little ways up an anonymous hutong in the midst of Jinbao Jie, this Yunnan private kitchen is an oasis of edibility in a desert of high-rises. Wuchanju offers RMB 128, RMB 200 and RMB 500 set menus, and all diners in a given party must purchase the same option. Spend a little more, and you’ll get to try some rarer wild mushrooms, flown in fresh from Yunnan.

  • Comfort Food: Yinxiang Xiaoguan at the Bell Tower

The decor of this soulful little restaurant a block north of the Bell Tower is equal parts rustic teahouse and friend’s living room. The old-style wooden menu (in Chinese only) offers a hodgepodge of regional comfort foods. Try the whole braised fish (RMB 39), the potato vermicelli with homemade sauerkraut, beef and chilli (RMB 26), and the divine lao Beijing-style frozen hawthorn jellies.

  • Crowd Pleasing: Orient Kitchen at the Village

New to the Village at Sanlitun, this large, split-level restaurant delivers crowd-pleasing Chinese and South-Asian food in a classy environment. The contemporary interior fuses traditional elements like pillars hand-painted in attractive Chinese style with sleek, jet-black tables and chairs.
