2010 Feb 24 Food Fight! Three Prizes Still Up for Grabs

Beijing’s been pretty quiet over Spring Festival, which perhaps explains why so few met out last Food Fight challenge. Before the break we said the first five users to post reviews of Sanlitun venues THAT HAVE NOT BEEN REVIEWED BEFORE would each win themselves a copy of Eileen Wen Mooney’s Beijing Eats, the essential guide to dining in the capital. Two users have scored themselves books – which means there are still three prizes up for grabs.

“This place is a mainstay of the Gongti area. As the years pass, it remains the same, firmly rooted in its little alley with a crowd of locals, Russians and Middle Eastern folk munching on kebabs, smoking a chicha and downing vodka by the bottle. The food is nothing out of this world but it's consistently good and foreigner friendly.
Oh right, i almost forgot Wink – they’ve got belly dancers, and what a show it is. The lovely ladies stroll around the room teasing diners and dragging them on stage every so often much to the delight of their companions for a little rattle and shake.”

“We love the décor, especially the open kitchen concept. The ambiance: lively but soothing. Not too busy when we were there. We both had the Hainanese Chicken Rice and thought it was just excellent - almost like the ones we had in Guangzhou. Service was alright. We thought it could be quicker since there were not too many occupied tables on that day. In summary, we will go back whenever we crave for some southeast Asian.”

    will officially reopen on June 3 with a brand-new interior and layout. The groceries have been relocated to the second floor, but the variety is similar to what was available previously, mainly imported goods ranging from cheese sold by weight, delicatessen products to fresh vegetables and fruits. However, they’ve changed their bread supplier to Bruno Bakery, distinctive from the bread offerings at Jenny Lou’s and April Gourmet.

    San Yang Cai’s name refers to three Chongqing specialties – dry-braised eels, loach with pickled mustard greens, and spiced frog stew – belonging to the jianghu cai (江湖菜) branch of Sichuan cuisine. Jianghu cai is characterized by three main traits – it’s folksy, rustic and eclectic. Spicier fare prevails at San Yang Cai, but the cooks display a talent for balancing flavors and creating quality dishes. The ingredients and seasonings are all imported from Chongqing, with vegetable oil (菜籽油) brought in from Sichuan.
