2010 Mar 10 April Fu's Day: One Kuai Drinks at Fubar

Fubar boss Chad Lager thrives on schemes and promotions that seem like madness. He launched Cinco de Drinko at Saddle Cantina, giving away half-price drinks for a whole day on the 5th of every month. Later, after moving to Tun, he did the unthinkable and started a ladies' night on Fridays - in Beijing nightlife, this was the equivalent of declaring the world to be round in medieval times. Both ideas worked. Then Chad went off to open Fubar, a "speakeasy" cocktail bar priding itself on large pours, quality drinks and good prices. All very sensible. Were Chad's days of dreaming up insane promotions over?
Not quite. Chad called the other day, exclaiming "I think I have a story for you ..." He did. On April 1, Chad and the Fubar team will launch the bar's latest innovation, Fu Fu Fool's Day. From 7-9pm that night, Chad will be serving up RMB 1 "mojito martinis" (that's actually a mojito made with vodka instead of rum). RMB 1. One kuai. For a drink. Chad tells us that Fu Fu Fool's Day will be a monthly promotion - on the first day of every month, customers can get those RMB 1 drinks for two hours.
Chad knows this is mad. He knows he'll have to deal with masses of customers offloading raggedy old one kuai notes on him. He knows Fubar's secret door might just get kicked down once and for all by hordes of people swarming from all corners of Beijing, but he seems to relish the prospect. If I watched this story on the news, I'd assume it was an April Fool's joke. It can't be, can it? No, it's got to be true - with Chad Lager and his drinks promotions, there's no joking around.
Fu Fu Fool's Day launches on Apr 1 at 7pm. Fubar (6593 8227)

Does Beijing need another Irish bar? Somebody obviously thinks so - the guys behind the Paradise CVS liquor store/late-night hangout have taken over the spot that most recently housed the utterly rubbish Swensen's/Prima Taste, and are reworking the space into two venues.
Talking Pints: Link Star, Pole Dancing, SuperColab and Hot Drinks
Welcome to our weekly roundup of all that's going on in nightlife this weekend in Beijing. Tonight (Nov 12) sees the grand opening of Link Star, the new club-lounge in World City (north of The Place). It's a decent little spot, with a good layout. Getting taxis around that area is often a bit tough at night, but it's worth a look. The party's free and kicks off at 9pm. Over at Chaoyang Park West Gate, Suzie Wong's hosts their monthly Suzie's Night party, from 10pm. The champagne will be flowing.Talking Pints: Fubar's New Look, Lantern Says Goodbye and Lauren Pope Says Hi
Quick roundup of bar goings-on this week. Fubar has redesigned and looks great – the bar now stretches around in an L-shape, while the mezzanine has been extended into a balcony that snakes around the wall to meet up with the elevated platform at the back of the bar. The ceiling feels lower, the bar has a warmer, more intimate ambiance than before and when you compare it with the original look, you can’t help but feel that Fubar 2.0 is an idea fully – and very successfully – realized.St. Patrick's Day: What's On

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to everyone who’s actually Irish. For everyone else, it’s just a normal Wednesday and you should be hard at work and not thinking at all about going out on a school night. If you’re out to celebrate the land that gave the world the likes of Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Roy Keane, Bono, B*Witched and Colin Farrell, here’s what’s going on in Beijing tonight:
Talking Pints: Burrito Wars, (Bar)maid in Manhattan, Rahzel and Renegades

If you didn’t see our post on the subject already, the Global Times was all hot under the collar yesterday with a lengthy report on the news that The Rickshaw has scrapped its original formula of burritos, cheap drinks and televised sport. “Burrito brawl!” “Sanlitun Tex-Mex high noon!” “copycat-cuisine combat!” - read the original story here. So out go the burritos, in comes a new menu and a more upmarket approach. Look out for a post on the all-new Rickshaw early next week. Meanwhile, over at the Villa, does Luga have something up his sleeve? …
