2010 Mar 19 Weekend Live Music Roundup: Secret Machines, French Folk, Triple Nipples
Despite the fact that big international bands keep failing to make it here (by "big" I mean famous, not necessarily good), promoters are still trying their best to bring quality acts to Beijing. Krautrock trio The Secret Machines (see interview here) and singer-songwriter Julie Doiron (see interview here) are playing tonight at Yugong Yishan and 2 Kolegas, while Zuoxiao Zuzhou (see interview here) performs his first solo in eight years at Century Theater. On Saturday, Japanese synth punk band Triple Nipples drive into 2 Kolegas for a night of god-know-what-would-happen. On other sides of the town, French folk duo Vialka and world music group Dawanggang jam at Tiny Salt Coffee Club, whereas Low Wormwood frontman Liu Kun releases his solo debut at D-22 with supports from some of Beijing's best folk musicians. Heavy weekend for live music, so take out your wallet now, you know musicians need money more than faith to keep rocking.

The snow on Monday, I don’t know what’s that all about, it’s March already. Don't know how it's been affecting the festival season (which is spring, in case you haven't seen it's coming), but the Beijing leg of JUE Festival is well under its way. Presented by Split Works, the festival consists of art, cinema and music events across Beijing and Shanghai (see our interview with the organizers here and full event schedule here). On Friday night, JUE sees the appearances of American indie singer/instrumentalist St. Vincent at Yugong Yishan and Danish rockabilly group Dead Elvis & His One Man Grave at D-22. On the local side, things get more hardcore at Mao Livehouse, where TOOKOO, Bigger Bang! and The Reason rock on the northern end of Nanluogu Xiang - maybe you can hear them in YGYS, since St. Vincent's music is relatively quiet, maybe.
Weekend Live Music Roundup: Akon, Hanggai & La Pegatina, Xiao He
Some acts are so big you feel you should see them live at least once, while some bands pull you back over and over again. As the cultural center of China, Beijing regularly offers both kinds of performers, sometimes even on the same night. Tomorrow night, Akon displays his charms at the MasterCard Center. Across town, the Mongolian rockers of Hanggai will cook up a musical feast with Spanish rumba band La Pegatina. Although I'm totally looking forward to the passion and joy of the multicultural double-bill, I'll feel a little sad knowing that I'm missing out on Akon singing his hit “I Just Had Sex.” Still, since that song has already made its way into Beijing's KTV parlors, I can perform it for my friends anytime.
Weekend Live Music Roundup: Hanggai, Perdel, Abaji
First, let's clear up some rumors and make some corrections. For those worried about whether there'll be any music festivals this May, as it stands Strawberry Music Festival has already got all the government approvals it needs. Midi Music Festival has so far been approved by the Haidian District government and is now waiting for approval from the city government. As for the Pinggu Music Festival, we still don't know much more about it than we did last week, though more information promises to come next week. We'll see.
Weekend Live Music Roundup: Shinichi Osawa, Pacalolo, Buyi
While you can still spot the remnants of Spring Festival in the occasional red decorations in the streets, Beijing gets back into operation real fast –maybe a little too soon, for some people. Are you overwhelmed all over again by the massive crowds? This weekend's live music gigs are set up to calm your nerves with jazz musicians and folksters leading the way. In addition to the regular jazz sessions, such as the ones at Wudaoying Hutong's V.A Bar and Houhai's East Shore Live, we have Nancy J. Brown from England presenting her debut album, and Japanese jazz master Shinichi Osawa, who wants to make you dance.
Weekend Live Music Roundup: Ex-Joyside's Side Project, All Guitar Stars Party
With fire crackers still keeping the city loud and noisy, it seems reasonable for our local musicians to rest for another night. If you really have the urge to see a gig tonight, a pop punk tribute to Bob Marley at Gulou Dongdajie's MAO Livehouse might be enough to re-warm your rock and roll nerve. Apart from that you don't have many options. But don't worry - the music scene will start its post-chunjie revival on Saturday.
