2010 Mar 24 Quick Link: Carsick Cars Washington Post Favourite

The Washington Post music blog Click Track published a post today, featuring the top 10 bands at Texas' SXSW festival picked by David Malitz. As we stroll down the list one by one, the last paragraph reads like this:
"I've saved the best for last. I like electric guitars. I like the sounds they make. I especially like when there's one really great sound and it is hypnotic and drones on for minutes at a time while the rhythm section keeps things chugging along. Sonic Youth pretty much perfected this, the Clean did a mighty fine job of refining it and now three kids in their mid-20s from Beijing have managed to enter that hallowed territory. High praise, I realize, but after witnessing a pair of their shows this week there is no denying this group is onto something special. Carsick Cars guitarist/vocalist Zhang Shouwang utilizes a small army of effects pedals to create his swirling cacophonies but everything is steeped in songcraft. The band's Saturday show at Speakeasy closed with "You Can Listen You Can Talk" and "Zhong Nan Hai," the latter of which is basically this Chinese generation's version of "Teenage Riot." EXCEPT BETTER. Interview with this band coming soon, too."
This is not the first time Carsick Cars have been mentioned in this blog though, as David Malitz also listed You Can Listen You Can Talk along with the likes of Animal Collective as one of the top 10 albums of 2009 in this post.
Isn't that beautiful? The Americans will soon be throwing their cigarettes to our cars.

Six years ago, D-22 was opened to give young bands more opportunities to play. Somehow it became a paradise for punk heads and indie kids. Then Beijing's "noisiest" youngsters also claimed it as their base, conducting their musical experiments there. Most people don't actually go to D-22 very often because of its location, but the club's existence is indubitably symbolic. It's a place where a gig can be delayed for over two hours because the sound system is acting up ... yet no one gets mad or anxious. Facing the end of a year and the end of an era, I don't know which one's harder to believe: that 2011 is done or that D-22 is closing.
Exploring the Underground Music and Art Scenes with Pangbianr

At some point, successful underground bands and musicians rise out of the rathskellers to play in mainstream venues, at which point they and their promoters leave behind the tatty bars and Monday night performances. As a result, there's always a need for promoters who truly hang out on the fringes in search for the next big thing.
Pangbianr is the latest promotion to do just that. Founder Josh Feola, who launched the bilingual website on June 1, is aiming for high-detail, low-volume promotion that highlights the city's experimental musicians and artists who really, actually deserve your attention.
Shouwang Speaks Out on the Carsick Cars Split

Carsick Cars' announcement of their split from the stage of Yugong Yishan on Tuesday came as a shock to many, but band leader Zhang Shouwang revealed to theBeijinger.com today that the band has been struggling with this for months. There is, however, a silver lining – Shouwang is reforming the band with a new lineup.Carsick Cars Announce Split
While the Raveonettes rocked Yugong Yishan last night, the real event of the night for the local scene came during the set of support act Carsick Cars. As the band rolled into their standard closing number "Zhongnanhai," singer/guitarist Zhang Shouwang announced from the stage, “This is our last show… the past five years has been really important to us.”

Carsick Cars are crap. They're in no way can be compared to Sonic Youth. And Sonic Youth finished being "sonic" in the nineties.
I still don't understand that there are people digging this feedback crap.
