2010 Mar 31 Late-night Vibes & 31st-floor Views: Box Club Opens in Jianwai Soho

A jungle of tower blocks, lonely corridors and anonymous doorways – Jianwai Soho is fast becoming a haven to fans of Japanese cocktail bars. Box Club now brings late-night vibes and 31st-floor views to the scene, adding another option to supplement spots like Bar Promise, Yao Xin and Twilight.

At RMB 45-50 for cocktails, a gin and tonic here is relatively expensive, but impressive. The beer selection is tiny, but caters to all spending habits. You might surprise friends by plucking this place from among Jianwai Soho’s mysteries; with some fine-tuning, Box has potential to impress them enough that they’ll want to return.

Daily 11.30am-1.30am. Rm 3105, 31/F, Bldg 6, Jianwai Soho, 39 Dongsanhuan Zhonglu, Chaoyang District. (5869 1798) 朝阳区东三环中路39号建外Soho 6号31层3105室

Gulou 121 seems odds-on to be stamped with the same old cookie-cutter design that dominates Gulou nightlife. While not a revolutionary break from the neighborhood norm, This Drum Tower-area music bar sings a promising tune with its live shows.

Billed as Beijing’s first gastropub, the Park Side Bar & Grill has opened just in time for the World Cup. The “gastro” element rests on the shoulders of Zach Lewison (previously chef at Union Bar & Grille), a man known for his ace interpretations of bar food.

  • Where Musicians Congregate: VA Cafe & Bar

Former Quasimodo member Qi Bin wants VA Cafe to be a place where musicians congregate – jazzy ones in particular. Rather than luring them with flashy drinks (beers from RMB 15, cocktails RMB 35) or brash design, Qi Bin has equipped his little bar with a stage, drum kit and piano, and what he rates as one of Beijing’s best sound systems.

Real Irish pubs are run by Irish people and characterized by a good pint, a welcoming atmosphere and maybe a bit of televised sport. While Molly Malone’s isn’t Irish-owned, it is certainly the most Irish Irish pub in Wangfujing.
