2010 Mar 31 Where Musicians Congregate: VA Cafe & Bar

Former Quasimodo member Qi Bin wants VA Cafe to be a place where musicians congregate – jazzy ones in particular. Rather than luring them with flashy drinks (beers from RMB 15, cocktails RMB 35) or brash design, Qi Bin has equipped his little bar with a stage, drum kit and piano, and what he rates as one of Beijing’s best sound systems.
Performances are currently limited to Fridays and Saturdays, but the commitment to bringing quality music performances into the space is palpable, and helps set this atmospheric space apart from the many hutong cafe-bars that threaten to spread Wi-Fi addiction and hipster listlessness to the general population.

This campus-style café-bar suffers from a surprisingly unimaginative approach to design. The long bar area is pleasing enough, but seating is arranged in unnecessarily rigid lines, and Mao posters are haphazardly thrown about to cover bare red walls.

Gulou 121 Sings a Promising Tune

Gulou 121 seems odds-on to be stamped with the same old cookie-cutter design that dominates Gulou nightlife. While not a revolutionary break from the neighborhood norm, This Drum Tower-area music bar sings a promising tune with its live shows.
Beijing’s First Gastropub: Park Side Bar & Grill

Billed as Beijing’s first gastropub, the Park Side Bar & Grill has opened just in time for the World Cup. The “gastro” element rests on the shoulders of Zach Lewison (previously chef at Union Bar & Grille), a man known for his ace interpretations of bar food.

No kidding, the kick drum mic is on a boom and the mid/tops are at knee level. Perhaps he has a dark sense of humor.
Good job on pushing "live" jazz though!
