2010 Jun 28 Gulou 121 Sings a Promising Tune

Gulou 121 seems odds-on to be stamped with the same old cookie-cutter design that dominates Gulou nightlife. While not a revolutionary break from the neighborhood norm, This Drum Tower-area music bar sings a promising tune with its live shows.
At weeknight jam sessions and weekend gigs, bands play everything from Mongolian folk to covers of “Poker Face” and Dire Straits songs. The style is a clash of saloon bar and minimal Chinese kitsch, the drinks a fairly pedestrian selection of cheap beers (RMB 15-25), whiskeys (RMB 25-30) and cocktails (RMB 25).
Battle it out on the upstairs foosball table, or relax on the breezy rooftop terrace with a view of the Gulou rooftops – enjoy it while you still can (the area is undertaking a massive redevelopment).
Daily 2pm-late. 121 Jiugulou Dajie, Xicheng District. (8404 3430) 西城区旧鼓楼大街121号
