2010 Jul 15 Jurassic Mark: Nu-Mark at Yugong Yishan on Saturday
Former Jurassic 5 DJ/producer Nu-Mark is back in Beijing this Saturday at Yugong Yishan with his big suitcase of noise-making tricks. We interrupted him for a few minutes and asked him to mull over reunions, Sacha Baron Cohen and “quasi-lesbian” fans. Read on.
First of all, thanks for “Concrete Schoolyard” – I still love that track. What was your starting point for the song?
We had a meeting at (fellow Jurassic 5 DJ) Cut Chemist's studio and went outside to take a break. We chilled out there as he played the raw beat. I knew when I heard the beat that we had to go in and work on that song right away.
What does it feel like when people come up to you gushing out things like “Thanks for ‘Concrete Schoolyard’”?
It feels great. I feel like I got into the music business at the perfect time. I was very fortunate to experience success before the industry took a crash.
When you played Song in 2008, our reviewer commented that “Nu-Mark's blend of funk and soul with old-school and underground hip-hop played an awkward backdrop to gay Europeans and quasi-lesbian Chinese women making out on a constricted dance floor.” Is that how you remember it?
Haha, cool – I love quasi-lesbian Chinese women. Hope they come again! Everyone seemed to enjoy it. The party wasn't that bad from what I remember, Song just wasn't the right club for the night. I know Shanghai wasn't like that – Shanghai was off the hook! Sometimes it's tough to find your crowd though. That was my first trip to Beijing, so I just figured the city only liked electronic music. I'm working with a promoter that understands what I do this time around, so we'll see how it goes.
You’re known for using all sorts of toys in your sets – got anything new for Beijing this time round?
I don't know what set I'm going to do yet. Maybe I need to find a quasi-lesbian toy to fit the crowd’s mood. People seem to really like the chimp that plays the cymbals.
What are you listening to right now?
I like A-Skillz, Hot 8 Brass Band, R.L. Burnside, Seu Jorge, Pac Div and NYOIL. I really listen to all kinds of music, but I enjoy playing music that fits my reputation. Anything warm and funky, I'm playing it.
Name an MC who was born to rap over your tracks.
I don't think I've found that MC yet. There's a lot of MCs I wanna work with, but I won't know what the chemistry is like until we collaborate. I'd love to work with Nas, Pac Div, Diz Gibran, Haz Solo and Pharoahe Monch.
Any chance of a Jurassic 5 reunion?
No talk of a reunion. I saw Cut [Chemist] about a week ago and Chali [2na] about three weeks ago. I love ‘em all.
Who would play you in a Nu-Mark biopic?
It’d be cool to see Robert Downey Jr. go at it. He looks like he's always in intense thought about something. That kind of fits me. He's a little crazy like me too.
And if you could play the lead role in somebody else’s biopic, who would it be?
I'd like to do something dramatic and comedic – that's really how my life is. Maybe a story about a troubled comedian. I could probably do Sacha Baron Cohen.
Play with Nu-Mark at Yugong Yishan on July 17. RMB 80, RMB 50 (advance). 10pm.

Vicarious Bliss, or Andy Gardiner as he's known in his own house, is one of the artists making up the roster at electro label Ed Banger Records. He's in town this weekend along with labelmate Mr. Flash as part of The M-Ed Banger Weekend. The pair play Yugong Yishan on Saturday night, but we asked Mr. Bliss a few questions about his name, ideal festive plans, and why he thinks a few of his fellow DJs are just "wankers."Let's Get Ready to Rumble: Beatboxing With Shamik at Yugong Yishan

As one half of Gang Starr, DJ Premier has already justified his place among hip-hop’s pantheon of heroes. Following the death in April of the duo’s MC, Guru (aka Keith Elam), Premier arrives in Beijing this week as the group’s sole surviving member. We caught Primo in a sober mood as he reflected on losing his friend and long-term collaborator, on the controversy over Guru’s “farewell letter,” and on the musical scores he still hasn’t settled.
