2010 Jul 23 Sanlitun Houjie Update

Earlier today we reported that the bars, restaurants and shops opposite Tongli Studios on Sanlitun Houjie were mysteriously closed last night. Having visited the area at lunchtime, Marc Beck has ascertained that the shutdown was the result of a police sweep of the area yesterday.
According to staff at Muse, located on the first floor of Tongli Studios across the street from Luga’s et al., police visited the venues in question yesterday and informed them that their premises had to close because they are located in a residential block not licensed for commercial activities.
Sounds like someone has annoyed the local boys in blue.
Luga’s was open at lunchtime today, as were the DVD shops along the strip. Bars such as Pure Girl remained shut, but it remains to be seen whether they will open this evening.
Waitstaff at Luga’s Basement and staff in the DVD shops simply replied “Wo bu zhi dao” when asked about last night’s events. Staff at Luga's Villa down the street, however, echoed what the Muse staff had said about the Sanlitun Houjie venues being closed for operating in a residential block. When we asked for comment from Luga himself, we were informed that he was currently “On a plane to the US.”
This is not the first time Sanlitun Houjie has faced temporary closure, and some of the venues in question have also been subject to police raids in the past. It remains to be seen whether last night was simply a brief disruption to business as usual, or whether this is a more serious attempt to clear the area and bring the street more in line with Sanlitun’s increasingly gentrified air.

Something is afoot at Sanlitun. Rumors have been circulating for some time that the venues opposite Tongli Studios on Sanlitun Houjie, including Luga’s, Pure Girl Bar and several DVD stores, have been under pressure to close. Last night (Thursday, July 23) all the venues opposite Tongli Studios were shut.
Street Beats Meet Street Eats: Beijing Snacks With The Syndicate and Conrank

Beijing’s favourite urban bassmongers, The Syndicate, bring special guest Conrank up from Shanghai to Lantern on February 18 for a massive night of bassy nutrition. In case you didn’t know, Conrank’s nickname is Chaofan Ge (炒饭哥), which made for a spot of nightlife-dining crossover fun.
Capital Bites: Luga Says The Wurst Is Yet To Come

Perhaps he was never away, but I've seen so little of Luga in the past year that I had wondered what he was up to. There was talk he was getting out of Beijing, had moved to America, or was planning to open a caviar lounge on the rooftop of the Workers' Stadium. And then the doors of a bar swung open and in he swaggered, Luga, legend of Sanlitun, with a massive grin on his face.
Racy Reds: Romantic Wines That Will Seduce

“Grape Press” is a regular magazine column in which we recommend wines to suit various occasions and price points.
Whether it’s a love affair with the grape or choosing that fine bottle to share with someone special, only fools rush in.
Champagne is often the first choice to whet just about any appetite, but its high acidity can be tough on stomachs, especially when served as an aperitif without food. Rosé wines can make for a cheerful mood, but not a lot of them are sold in China. As stock moves slowly, many are sadly out of condition by the time they are sold. While there are plenty of whites that make attractive partners, this month we’re focusing on that quintessentially Chinese color: red. But if you want to impress your date, don’t necessarily go for the well-trodden. Grand Cru Classé red Bordeaux may have a price tag that turns heads, but it is rarely seductive on the palate, especially when young.
This month’s wine selections are all hearty reds with plenty of body and staying power – lush, plush and what even wine professionals would term “sexy.”
Bar of the Month: Union

Although we’re big fans of the “and Grille” part of Union Bar and Grille, there’s nothing we like more than a seat at the bar, a happy hour pint and a handful of their complimentary salty chips. Led by the ever-affable Andy Bright, Union’s staff is also top-notch.

Re: Sanlitun Houjie Update
All the bars on Sanlitun Houjie were open for business as usual on the weekend. Several men were seen inspecting the street clutching building plans on Sunday afternoon, but it's not known whether this was related to the residential versus commercial zoning issue cited as a reason for last week's closure.

I am all for nostalgia but will anyone, aside from the mob and Luga, miss that street if it is torn down?
