2010 Aug 13 See the Vintage Red Army Perform MJ's "Beat It"

Here are a couple of amusing videos to help pass the last afternoon of the working week. One of the latest trends in China’s hyperactive cyberspace realm is re-cutting old Cultural Revolution-era musical clips to match contemporary songs. According to ChinaSMACK, “In the middle of June of this year, a video was uploaded to the Chinese internet in which the video from a Red Army Orchestra performance was synced to Waving Flag, the song by K’naan used as the official song for this year’s World Cup Championship.”

In the last two months the trend has gone “supernova” with vintage Red Army clips appearing for everything from Queen’s We Will Rock You to various film theme songs. One of the best is this one using Michael Jackson’s Beat It.

ChinaSMACK has a whole range of other clips here. Be warned the joke wears thin pretty quickly though – especially since they all seem to basically re-cut the same clip.

Here’s the Waving Flag clip from the World Cup.

Voyeurism is so hot right now. It's all over cable TV, social media and the evening news, and we may as well admit: Yes, it’s hard to escape watching or being watched. • Chun Yun Travails

The Spring Festival move has started. Chun Yun is the world’s largest yearly human migration and it is expected that half of China’s population will travel over the next few weeks. With up to 700 million people traveling trying to get home is no small feat and people have found lots of ways to avoid train travel, which - from the looks of it - does not bode well for a relaxing holiday.

  • Beijing Traffic Congestion Reaches Breaking Point

On several nights last week while cycling home I was caught in traffic jams around the Gongti area so bad that even my trusty bicycle couldn’t get through the melee. Two lane by-roads were transformed into four lane highways by cars lining up along spaces normally reserved for bikes and parked vehicles, which meant a single tricycle-transporter wedged between vehicles could render whole blocks completely impassable. This morning the Global Times confirmed my suspicions that Beijing’s traffic congestion has finally reached bursting point.

The decidedly low-key and ever-mysterious translator and blogger Fauna has built up chinaSMACK (www.chinasmack.com) into one of the most interesting China-related sites on the web today. With its provocative, humorous and, at times, disturbing translations of Chinese articles and forum posts the site has evolved from a one-woman labor of love into a sophisticated operation involving submitters, web ads and branded merchandise that garners an ever-increasing amount of attention from readers, other bloggers and news organizations alike. We spoke with her recently about her methods and motivations.
