2010 Aug 20 Weekend Live Music Roundup: Tang Dynasty, Xie Tianxiao, Carsick Cars

Who's the best Swedish drummer in Beijing? Jonathan (Tan Tan) from P.K.-14 must be popping into many of your heads. But, there's a girl I like better than him. Last year, I saw her at this random gig at MAO, it was so powerful and energetic, and I was totally shocked that all this was from a doesn't-seem-strong-at-all girl behind the drum kit. I didn’t even remember the name of the band, while I somehow remembered her nationality. A year later, morning while I was on my way to work, I noticed this girl in standard professional outfit: white shirt, skirt, heels, was walking in front of me, and it was this awesome chick-drummer. I talked to her a little bit and told her that I think her drumming skill is amazing. She looked so happy and surprised... I think that made her day. That was when I found out that the band’s name is Nakoma, who will be playing at 13 Club Saturday night (Aug. 21) and MAO Livehouse on Sunday night (Aug. 22).

Besides this, there will be more cool gigs going on this weekend. Max Star Festival is coming to the last and best 3 days. All the top Chinese bands such as Carsick Cars, Xie Tianxiao and Tang Dynasty are finally coming up to the stage. Then the Arrtco 2010 Down Town Life Concert at Yugong Yishan, which got postponed to this Sunday because of the national silence tribute thing last weekend. Perdel, The Dancers and Pet Conspiracy are going to make this free event a great one.

Weekend Live Music Roundup: Tang Dynasty, Xie Tianxiao, ...

It's "The Amazing Insurance Salesmen" and not the "Zhang Si'an" band that will play at 2 Kolegas on the 21 of August but.

First part of the night will be "Purple Smog", the only Jimi Hendrix cover band in China.

Weekend Live Music Roundup: Tang Dynasty, Xie Tianxiao, ...

"The Amazing Insurance Salesmen" will also be playing on Sunday at Mao livehouse.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Ex-Joyside's Side Project, All Guitar Stars Party

With fire crackers still keeping the city loud and noisy, it seems reasonable for our local musicians to rest for another night. If you really have the urge to see a gig tonight, a pop punk tribute to Bob Marley at Gulou Dongdajie's MAO Livehouse might be enough to re-warm your rock and roll nerve. Apart from that you don't have many options. But don't worry - the music scene will start its post-chunjie revival on Saturday.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: P.K. 14, Carsick Cars, Acoustic Metal Show

Local record label Maybe Mars is a bit obsessed with distinguishing generations lately. Their new release Generation Six just came out recently, twelve songs from four bands (Rustic, Birdstriking, Flyx, Old Fashion) make up this album; left people wondering what the other five generations are. Half of the question is getting answered tonight. Three bands of three different generations gather at Yugong Yishan tonight: Mr. Graceless didn't make their songs to the Generation Six album but got to represent them with Carsick Cars and Post-rock icons P.K. 14 representing two older generations.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Slap, Buyi and the Best Chinese Metal Band Yaksa

Earlier this week a weibo (微博) post by folk/rock band Buyi stating that their gig tonight at Jiangjinjiu will probably be their last at the venue set off a swirl of speculation that the popular Gulou area club had closed down and was set to be demolished – a rumor that was dispelled (somewhat) the following day when the band explained they had merely heard that Jiangjinjiu will be torn down in March. The management, for its part, claims no further knowledge and says it will remain open until the wrecking ball comes.

  • Christmas Live Music Roundup: Brain Failure, Su Yang, 13 Club Anniversary

Once again, many of us will be reminded that there are not enough cabs in Beijing tonight. While walking might become the fastest way of transportation, it's lucky for those of you who live in the Gulou area – you don't have to join the "Taxi War" to find good parties. And you will feel even luckier if you are into punk rock: MAO Livehouse goes punk from Friday all the way to Sunday. Long term punkheads Brain Failure lead the scene tonight; a few D-22 regulars will come down to Gulou and host the “last big punk party” of the year on Saturday, and Japanese top punk band Good 4 Nothing keeps the same spirit rolling on Sunday.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Metal & Punk, Curry & Coco, Air & Style

If you don't have any interest in Michael Learns to Rock, tonight is a good night to have a listen to the young powers. Bigger Bang and a few other young acts gather at MAO. And Jiang Hu will start early to celebrate the World's Aids Day. At the same time, D-22 and 13 Club remain punk and metal at Wudaokou.

I know it's getting freezing outside, but we don't have time to let the coldness hold us back. beside the local acts, brave westerners are coming to town to warm up the party season. French duo Curry & Coco suggest peopel to wear nothing at their gig (see our interview with them in the magazine). Get ready to dance hard if you are really going to do so tomorrow night. Yugong Yishan's heating is strong, but probably not that strong. The same night, Swedish black metal band Marduk takes over MAO Livehouse, and I don't think they will accept you being too cool over there.
