2010 Sep 01 Authenticity Without the Glitz: Geba Geba's Japanese Cuisine

This unassuming restaurant is hidden behind a sliding wooden door. Winding past dimly lit hallways, you soon find yourself in a minute seating area with a low sushi counter. (If you prefer privacy, beautifully appointed tatami rooms are also available.)

You’ll probably need help with the Japanese-only menu. Don't worry – the servers will describe the salads, rolls, teriyaki, donburi and grilled fish on offer.

If California rolls are your go-to dish, though, you’re out of luck. Geba Geba aims for authenticity without the glitz – there are no heavy sauces or gimmicky rolls. The tuna avocado roll (RMB 48) contains an explosion of flavors, from zesty mint to the sweet yet salty unagi.

More traditional dishes include zaru soba/udon (RMB 36) and salmon sashimi (RMB 78). They also have a decent selection of spirits, so order plum wine (RMB 31) or Fukuju Mikagego sake (RMB 110), and finish off the meal with the taro pudding or handmade red bean mochi. With authentic cuisine, serene atmosphere, and refined staff, Geba Geba is a quiet corner of Japan in Beijing.
