2010 Sep 07 Peerless Beer Selection, Spartan Details: El Nido bar in Fangjia Hutong

El Nido is Spartan in most details. There’s no bar, no indoor seating, and only a few vintage beer posters coloring the drab interior. They did, however, remember to install shelves and fridges positively brimming with wine and bottled beers. At the height of the Cold War, some paranoid beer connoisseur probably constructed a personal fallout shelter like this.

There’s no drinks list, forcing you to browse powerful Belgian Trappist brews (RMB 30-35) and imports from the English-speaking world. Dig further and uncover Czech beers like Cerna Hora (RMB 35).

By Beijing standards of choice, quality and value, El Nido’s is a fairly peerless beer selection. Harbin (RMB 10), on the rise in Beijing, pops up as El Nido’s sole domestic brew. There’s also pastis (RMB 10), house-infused brandy and vodka (RMB 10-25) and an impressive collection of absinthe.

With its make-do approach, El Nido reworks one of the great rituals of Beijing summers – Yanjing and chuan’r on the street – with better drinks and Cuban tunes. The looming challenge is to find a way of bringing the fun inside for the winter.

  • Talking Pints: BrewDog Launch, Black Sun Relaunch, Tango, Haze and Paul van Dyk's Return

Marketing-savvy Scottish independent brewer BrewDog is being officially launched in Beijing today, with an invite-only party taking place this afternoon. El Nido and Paradise CVS (the late-night booze supermarket along the road from Nearby the Tree) are the first bars to have it in stock. Can’t wait to try this (BrewDog was established sometime after my departure from sunny Scotland), though I’m told it’s not going to be cheap.

  • Twilo: Hidden Drinks and Dancing at Guanghua Lu

If Twilo existed in a cartoon, it would probably be hidden inside a seemingly innocuous tree trunk. As with Haze, a few meters away, an extremely steep staircase leads you to the basement dance floor – although at Twilo you emerge awkwardly behind the DJ booth. At least it looks good, thanks to a futuristic, contoured design.

  • Doron: Suntory Time on Dongzhimen

Accessed via struggling Italian restaurant Abella, Doron falls short of the impressive standards set by other Japanese bars. The shabby, threadbare carpeted stairs up to the bar inspire little confidence, and the decor does nothing to alleviate those doubts. The space is split between a lounge with deep couches, and a fully stocked but uninspiring bar area whose design appears inspired by a back-alley pool hall.
