2010 Sep 13 Quick Link: China Driving Apps

We know how many of you love China-relevant iPhone apps, so here’s a recent post on the technology blog Giz-China that profiles some useful applications for drivers in China.

The post features three apps which are free to download.

The first is “China Plates,” which helps you with those characters on Chinese license plates that identify where a vehicle is from.
You can download China Plates here.

“China Drive – Practice For Your Driving Theory” allows you to practice the computer-based theory test necessary to get a Chinese license if you already hold a driver’s license in another country. Probably the most useful of the three apps listed in the post.
You can download China Drive here.

Lastly, “China Vehicle Violation Lookup” allows you to input your license plate number to see if you’ve accumulated any fines. Handy for those who like driving too fast.
You can download Violation Lookup here.

The Giz-China post has a more detailed description of each app.

Re: Quick Link: China Driving Apps

Hi Dan,

Would you be interested in taking a look at our iPhone application, MO-Call?

MO-Call basically allows users to make low cost local and international calls, SMS and VoIP calls from their mobile phone. I guess this would appeal to expats and tourists currently in Beijing.

Download MO-Call

Please do not hesitate to contact me.

Re: Quick Link: China Driving Apps

A friend of mine used the China Drive app and found it very useful in gaining his license. He recently put out a free ebook designed to help foreigners through the process of getting a Chinese driver's license - it's downloadable from http://www.themiddlekingdom.org if you're interested.

This week Apple launched both a Chinese online store and app store. Sounds great! But, as many of our previous posts indicate, Apple and China mix as well as oil and water. Apple’s app store is accessible if you have the proper credit cards and the online store has already been brought down by scalpers in less than a day.

  • Chinese iPhone4 Offers Up Unique Quirks

The release of the iPhone 4 this weekend drew large crowds and long lines. One of the anticipated features of the new iPhone was its WIFI capability – a feature restricted by the authorities until recently. But this is China and before everyone thinks that the powers-that-be are going soft we found some other interesting aspects unique to the Chinese iPhone.

  • Instant Character Recognition Feature for iPhones

Pleco, a New York-based company who specialize in developing tools to learn Chinese, have announced a new iPhone feature that looks like it will be invaluable, not only for those learning Chinese characters, but for anyone who lives here and isn’t fluent in reading Chinese. The feature uses the iPhone camera to look at and “read” Chinese characters through an Optical Character Recognition system. There’s no need to take a photograph – you just point you camera and the app provides an instantaneous definition.

  • iPhone China Apps

Steven over at Lost Laowai has provided a list of cool China iPhone apps for those who have made the leap to smart phones. Unfortunately I’m still using an antique Nokia, so I haven’t been able to check out the Lost Laowai suggestions, but a couple of them sound particularly useful for Beijingers.
