2010 Sep 16 Creators Invade 798

The Creators Project started its world tour in June in New York City, and has since made footprints in London, Sao Paulo and Seoul.
This weekend, from September 17 to 19, the Creators Project comes to Beijing, bringing together nearly one hundred artists, filmmakers and musicians to display their works and performances at 798 Art District.
Things kick off on Friday at 10pm, with Tresor. Beijing transforming one of 798’s disused factory buildings for a night of techno and other electronic sounds from German DJs. Entry is RMB 50. The Rose Bud, 706 North 1st Street, 798 Art District. Please note the Tresor event listed in this week’s 7 Days Newsletter for Saturday is in fact a panel discussion – the party is on Friday only.

On Saturday there will be a series of displays and exhibitions of artistic multi-media interactive works. Visitors will witness the Beijing debut of many current masters’ works from around the world, including award-winning artist Mira Calix, interactive music makers Radical Friend and United Visual Artists who have designed visuals for leading global acts such as Massive Attack, U2 and the Chemical Brothers. As for their Chinese counterparts, they will be represented by creative pioneers such as Li Hui, Peng Lei, Vega Wang, Xu Wenkai and Xu Feng.

Music is no doubt the highlight of the party, and the lineup includes Major Lazer feat Diplo, Delorean, New Pants, Re-tros, Queen Sea Big Shark and White+, as well as a few electronic artists and DJs such as Sulumi, B6, DJ Wordy, Dead J and Nick Catchdubs.

All of the exhibition spaces will be open to the public on Sunday.

Re: Creators Invade 798

After waiting for about an hour to get into the party on Saturday night, we found the place more than half empty. Not surprisingly, since the other half of the crowd was still lining up for a confrontation with a blond bored looking woman, who did not find the fact that the line was growing endlessly very impressive and did not consider for a moment to take over the computer from her Chinese colleague who did not manage to spell the name 'Steven' correctly after 4 efforts. After being told that the line was so long 'because it was a good party' we could not wait for this to be proven. With few people inside the way to the open bar was open where the offer of, arguably non-alcoholic, cocktails was impressive. The party did not kick off, though. With the bands leading up to Major Lazer giving away a good show, Diplo's tricks were expected to hit the crowd. A confused set, going from cheesy 90's to comfortable reggae beats, left me disinterested. When Diplo managed to call tens of people on stage to kick them off with rude language like: 'Get the f*** off my stage, who the f*** are you people, f*** off', I lost the last bit of interest and joined the smokers outside. Far away from this awkward party.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Yugong Yishan Sixth Anniversary, Creators Project, GBOB

I have heard this so many times from others: "I want to see more gigs, but always ended up at some club or party, because my friends like those." or something similar.
Who are those friends? OK, I have to admit it, I have them too. Sometimes, you would just miss a good gig like that. Hence I'm proud of myself that I resisted all other temptation and went to 2 Kolegas and Yugong Yishan last weekend and saw some young bands I wanted to see. A band which actually has been around for many years but has never been known by many people caught my attention at the GBOB: Residence A (A公馆). They handled their post-brit-rock style really well. Keep an eye on the GBOB, there could be more surprises.
