2010 Sep 21 Midweek Live Music Roundup: Dying Fetus, Exodus, GBOB

I feel like I’m still recovering from last weekend, and the next is already coming again. Anyway, when you have a few free days ahead of you, I suggest you start with music. For those of you who are too lazy to go out to the FunHill Music Festival, my suggestion is to go heavy with the metal heads. Painkiller Magazine is having their 10th birthday parties – literally 2 parties – at MAO Livehouse. Dying Fetus and Exodus are here to make sure that you will have sour necks on the “real weekend.”
The chief editor of Painkiller Magazine happens to be one of the judges in the Global Battle of the Bands which will have its Beijing Final on Sunday at Yugong Yishan. It turned out only two out of four planned heats happened in the past two weeks – one got canceled and one got extended to this Sunday before the Final. The battle will start at 7.30pm and two bands will be chosen by both judges and fans to compete with four other bands who have already been selected in the Beijing Final: Kick Ass, Residence A, Raging Mob and Nakoma.

Weekend Live Music Roundup: Yugong Yishan Sixth Anniversary, Creators Project, GBOB

I have heard this so many times from others: "I want to see more gigs, but always ended up at some club or party, because my friends like those." or something similar.
Who are those friends? OK, I have to admit it, I have them too. Sometimes, you would just miss a good gig like that. Hence I'm proud of myself that I resisted all other temptation and went to 2 Kolegas and Yugong Yishan last weekend and saw some young bands I wanted to see. A band which actually has been around for many years but has never been known by many people caught my attention at the GBOB: Residence A (A公馆). They handled their post-brit-rock style really well. Keep an eye on the GBOB, there could be more surprises.Weekend Live Music Roundup: Heaven Shall Burn, Gangzi Tuliguer, Ourself Beside Me

You probably just had a long week, but Beijing never gives you a rest – there's always so much happening. Sometimes I feel it's even a waste to sleep on weekends. Maybe I'm greedy. The good news is that Beijing is the right city to be greedy in – even though we just had two back to back music festivals in the suburbs last weekend the city is not getting any quieter.
Metalheads from Germany and Japan are in town. From the German side, the thing that interested me about Heaven Shall Burn is not their political attitude, but the fact they are vegetarians. Can someone explain to me: what is the connection between metal and vegetarians? Because there are many who are both. It will really surprise me if the Japanese Hydrophobia only eats vegetables too, since they are "grinding brutal death."Weekend Live Music Roundup: Kurt Cobain Tributes, King Ly Chee and The Randy Abel Stable

From grunge to metal rock, rounding an Eric Clapton tribute outfit, past hardcore, reggae and folk, with a soft Kurt Cobain landing, the weekend provides us with a musical gauntlet to negotiate.
Have You Met: Montée

Pop is their outfit, dancing is in their veins. Montée offers hit tunes for the dance floor, and presents them with a twist. Furthermore, in 2010 they won the title of “Best Pop Group” at Spellemann (the Norwegian Grammys), beating out bands like Kings of Convenience.

Dime Records’ Mou Chenggang.
“Amdy Baryp” by Yat-Kha. The sound from Tuva, like a puff of wind blowing on the grassland.
