2010 Sep 27 Buffalo wings & Moosehead beer: The Box Opens at Gulou

Jiugulou, west of the Drum and Bell towers, has long been a go-to strip for spicy wings and frosty Tsingtao. This Canadian-run bar brings a new riff on this classic formula – Buffalo wings and Moosehead beer.

“Boxy” it is, though the name presumably refers to the ice hockey the bar regularly screens. Or perhaps it’s what you’ll go home in if you consume too much of Quebec’s famous artery-clogging poutine (fries with cheese curds and beef gravy, RMB 30).

Canada’s beloved Moosehead beer is RMB 28, a big mug of local draft just RMB 10, and cocktails RMB 25-35. The Buffalo wings, whose recipe is closely guarded by Canadian owner Arthur, are enhanced with a side order of chunky blue cheese sauce. Nearby hostels provide a backpacker crowd, who chink glasses late into the night with homesick Canucks and curious locals lured in by the Maple Leaf out front. Breakfast will be available soon.

Good for: Canadians, ice hockey nerds

Also try: Ned’s, 12SQM

Daily noon-late. 5A Qianmachang Hutong (opposite Café Sambal), Jiugulou Dajie, Xicheng District (6401 3293)

Things seem to have been changing at The Box. I used to think they had the best wings of any I have had in China, but I went recently and they seemed smaller than ever before with a mild sweetness reminiscent of ketchup. I was disappointed. I wonder what happened to that awesome buffalo flavor they used to have. They also lost the keg, so there's no more inexpensive draft beer. I miss how The Box used to be with the spicy wings and frosty Tsingtao marketed above.

The poutine was great last time but the Wings are on a rapid decline. A unappealing sticky sweet sauce has replaced the awesome spicy buffalo flavor. Its a shame - no more awesome wings in Beijing.

  • Taking a Cue from Propaganda: Solutions Opens in Wudaokou

You can’t blame the owners of this Wudaokou club for taking its cues from Propaganda. In size, layout and feel, Solutions is virtually identical to its neighbor. For now, Solutions is the less packed of the two, although the first-floor lounge and downstairs dance floor liven up on Thursdays when students flock to Ladies’ Night (three free drinks for girls).

  • Silly Name, Succulent Burgers: Laowai's Lounge Opens in Wudaokou

This campus-style café-bar suffers from a surprisingly unimaginative approach to design. The long bar area is pleasing enough, but seating is arranged in unnecessarily rigid lines, and Mao posters are haphazardly thrown about to cover bare red walls.

  • the Beijinger - July 2010: The Music Issue - OUT NOW

Beijing's a noisy old place but over the din of the comings-and-goings of millions of people you can hear the sound of music. This is music being made right here and now in Beijing. Some's good, some's bad but it's happening and it's something for the city to take pride in. Beijing's becoming known for its music scene so we talked to people at the forefront of it. The only requirement that we had was that they weren't originally from Beijing. Our Cover Feature highlights the Chinese and Foreign acts who have left a musical stamp on the city that they now call home.

  • On the Eje: Good Beers on a Budget

With neighbors Temple and Jam already dealing in live music and cocktails respectively, Eje brings a good selection of beer to the table. The choice isn’t as large as at El Nido, but with a focus on Belgian and German brews (Paulaner, Erdinger, Maredsous, Westmalle), there’s enough quality to keep purists amused until they pass out.

  • Talking Pints: Punk Set to Slip Into the Night, as Elements and the "New D-22" Emerge

After just a three-day work week, we can get back to enjoying the fruits of summer tomorrow as the Beijing temperature heats up. One joint you should make the most of is Punk at the Opposite House. We just received confirmation from the hotel that the nightlife titan is set to close its doors for the last time on May 19th with a closing party. They also mentioned that it's set to be replaced somewhere along the line by "something yummy", and that Punk will still be available for private parties until then.
