What's Open and Closed 2: Restaurants and Bars

Following up on our earlier post, here's a guide to where you can and can't eat and drink over the New Year holiday.

Firstly, a few things you need to keep in mind if you're going out eating or drinking over Chinese New Year:
1. Many venues, especially neighborhood Chinese restaurants, will be completely shut down for the entire week-long holiday.
2. Many places will be closed for at least a couple of days and/or operating shorter business hours than normal
3. Many venues will be short-staffed - don't be surprised if service and standards are below-par (sloppy service? Beijing? Never ...)

The basic message: Wherever you plan to go, call ahead to confirm that they will be open.

To give you an idea though, we've checked in with a few bars and restaurants to put together this far-from-comprehensive list of who's open and who's closed (and when) over the Chinese New Year week:

DEAR PATRONS,
WE ARE CLOSED FROM 2ND TO 4TH FEBRUARY。WISH YOU A HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!

Every Hu down in Beijing Liked Spring Festival a lot...

But the Laowai Grinch, who lived just north of the third ring road, Did NOT!

The Grinch hated Spring Festival! The whole Spring Festival season! Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason.

It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right.

It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.

But I think that the most likely reason of all May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.

But, whatever the reason, His heart or his shoes, He stood there on Spring Festival Eve, hating the Chinese,

Staring down from his apartment with a sour, laowai frown at the warm lighted windows below in their town. For he knew every Chinese down in Beijing beneath Was busy now, hanging 福倒了wreath.

Grinch: And they're hanging their red lanterns!

He snarled with a sneer,

Grinch: Tomorrow is Spring Festival! It's practically here!

Then he growled, with his Laowai Grinch fingers nervously drumming,

Grinch: I MUST find some way to stop Spring Festival from coming!

For, tomorrow, he knew...

...All the Chinese girls and boys would wake bright and early. They'd rush for their fireworks! And then!

Oh, the noise! Oh, the Noise! Noise! Noise! Noise!
That's one thing he hated!

The NOISE!

NOISE!
NOISE!
NOISE!

Ian,

WHAT ABOUT IKEA??

Sincerely,

Concerned Comrade
