2011 Feb 11 Here the Hell is Matt!

“Who’s Matt again?” You know, that guy who put up videos of himself doing this dorky dance in different places, and it went viral on Youtube like so many things do, and then he got all sorta famous… “Oh.” Yeah well anyway, he’s coming to Beijing!

Good ol’ Matt is bringing his bad dancing to Sanlitun next Saturday, February 19, and he’s inviting people to join him. According to an email update he’s sent to all his fans who’ve asked to be updated so they can dance with him in his next video (a list I may or may not actually be on), he’s learning some new moves this time around!

Apparently, you’re to look for “the guy who looks like the guy in the dancing video.” (He also says, quite helpfully, to just go up and say hello, and that if he’s not him, he’ll let you know.)

For reference, here’s Matt selling out:

Just kidding. It’s not really selling out, is it, if the purest distillation of your art form is still, well, doing a dorky dance on Youtube? (Matt, if you’re reading this, please don’t deprive me my place of anonymity beside you and others as we dance ourselves into oblivion for the sake of viral stardom. I really was just kidding.)

Anyhow, find him on facebook (if you have a VPN), and let him know you and your posse are coming so he knows how many people to expect.

My favorite line from that above video? “In Vietnam without a Dong.” If that makes me incredibly immature ... [shrug], I’ve been called worse.

Oh yes. And here's where you're to find him:

Re: Here the Hell is Matt!

It's so great to hear that Matt will be dancing in the Jing! Is there a way to sign up to join him if we do have a VPN but are not on Facebook (yes, such people exist Wink )?

Re: Here the Hell is Matt!

What time will he be there?

Re: Here the Hell is Matt!

Good question, amysaltz. Matt will be at that location at 3pm on Saturday, February 19.

songgirl: to let him know you're coming through a non-Facebook route, you can email dancewithmatt@gmail.com

  • Alexander Wang Arrives With a Bang

Cold cement benches swathed in woolly pelts. Asphalt floors offset by bronze and mirrored walls. Sleek leather couches made unpretentious by lovingly worn creases. One feels very small at Alexander Wang’s second store in the world, a 4,000sqm space that perfectly captures the brand’s aesthetic contradictions: austere but natural, functional but flattering, and trendy but timeless.

It’s strange how the salty steam rising off a freshly grilled wiener is like a homing beacon drawing Americans to the mothership. Hidden in an alcove near the Apple Store, Dog on Fire stocks all-beef franks as well as organic pork sausages.

  • A Decade in Sushi: Hatsune Turns Ten Tonight

This evening, Hatsune hits a milestone achieved by very few non-Chinese restaurants in Beijing, as it celebrates its tenth anniversary. The original branch opened on Guanghua Lu in the fall of 2001, and was pretty much an instant success. In the ten years that have passed, Hatsune has gone from strength to strength, winning awards all over the place and opening a second branch in the heart of Sanlitun Village.
