2011 Feb 12 Jing Happiness: A Cantonese Cafe With Sparkle

Dominated by Hong Kong-style dishes, with occasional twists of Sichuan, Fujian, Malay and Western cuisine, this polished cafe offers attentive service and suits both business talk and intimate chat.

The Sichuan-style chicken feet (RMB 25), marinated with pickled peppers, is a “cold” dish that becomes fairly hot, with the spice amped up by the underlying layers of pickled cabbage.

Meanwhile, the braised sirloin in curry sauce (RMB 38) marries tender beef with equally soft chunks of fried potato. The only blemish is the uneven curry sauce, monotonously spicy with a slight aftertaste of lemongrass.

Soothe your burning taste buds with zhishi ju zajun 芝士焗杂菌 (RMB 28), a baked mix of mushroom and cream gravy, then “dim sum” up with Cantonese steamed milk (RMB 12) or a Macanese-style egg tart (RMB 6).

The Jing is a large, spacious, high ceilinged, well-lit restaurant more suitable for small to large groups and not really ideal for your cozy, intimate tete-a-tete dinner. Overall the decor is straightforward and no-nonsense, but the ambiance is ok anyway.The service was good and the food was great. Not too expensive which can be a problem with this suburb.
