Capital Bites: Kosher in Lido, Cafe Europa to Close, and Afro-Caribbean Cuisine in Sanlitun

A quick roundup of news from Beijing's restaurant scene to take you through the middle of the week.

Dini's Kosher Restaurant has reopened on Fangyuan Xilu, next to the gate of Si'de Gongyuan. One of the victims of the Super Bar Street clearout on Nuren Jie two years ago, Dini's return will be welcomed by Beijing's Jewish community and fans of Middle Eastern cuisine alike. They're currently only serving a very small percentage of the full menu, but the restaurant will be open fully sometime within the next few weeks.

Until now only a delivery and catering operation, Private Kitchen is now offering its Afro-Caribbean cuisine for sit-down dining based out of Sanlitun Beixiaojie restaurant Mana. Ghanaian cook Ms. Rose does a mean beef pasty, so we're looking forward to trying some more of her offerings.

Jianwai Soho restaurant Cafe Europa is to close on April 10. Known for its owners' enthusiasm for wine and quality wine list, the venue was below many people's radar but popular among many of those who did visit. An email from owner Joseph Kiang on March 29 explained the situation:
"Our landlord was trying to increase our rent up to 40 percent, which we would never be able to pay. It's sad for us and our crew to say goodbye, we hope we have been a good host for all of you. We want to thank you once more for all the pleasant evenings you spent at Cafe Europa, we hope you enjoyed our food, all the wines you have drunk, the talks we talked, the moments you shared with us."

Pantry Magic is having a "Moving Out" sale at Nali Patio, with the store's top-end kitchen utensils and other items discounted by up to 50 percent. We're still waiting for word on when the store will finally close and whether Pantry Magic will relocate.

Finally, Beijing Home Delivery is back in business - deliveries are currently only being made on weekends, and payment is strictly cash-on-delivery at the moment, but they expect to be expanding the service again fairly soon. See www.beijinghomedelivery.com for more information.
