Festival Fashion Tips: What (Not) to Wear to Midi, Strawberry and Music Valley

For once, we’re aiming to spend the entire long weekend in Beijing. Why, you ask? See here, here, here and here – need we say more?

Our Music Editor has been doing a fine job prepping us on what to expect from the music festivals. This year we can choose from Midi, Strawberry or Music Valley – or hit up all three, since they each take place over the span of three days (April 30-May 2).

Once you've settled on the lineups of your liking, however, you still face another dilemma: finding the perfect outfit.

Some of you may not have drawn the connection between music and fashion. In fact, music festivals draw out a very distinct aesthetic, one that will require some groundwork in getting right.

The key is to capture the essence of the ‘70s: a celebration of free-spiritedness, love and sensual tunes. After all, what do you plan on doing at the festival? Hopefully sunbathing, daytime drinking and rocking out. That calls for a get-up that will be low-fuss, skin-baring yet still quirkily stylish. The final results should be eclectic, ranging from feathered headdresses and crochet knit tops to suede fringe vests and maxi skirts.

Just take a look at a few of our favorite ensembles from Coachella, one of California’s biggest music festivals of the year.

Actresses Isabel Lucas and Kate Bosworth kept it simple, playing up their long dresses with messy locks and heaps of accessories. Their boytoys Angus Stone and Alexander Skarsgard stuck to plain pants and long sleeves. Props to Stone for keeping in line with the hippie vibe and daring to wear floral.

Meanwhile, designer/TV actress Nicole Richie and model Alessandra Ambrosio (note: photo from Coachella 2010) both donned denim cut-offs. Ritchie, per usual, nailed the bohemian look; her silk feather-print blouse adds a whimsical touch to an otherwise minimalist outfit. Ambrosio's standout pieces – the colorful headscarf and the slouchy cropped tee – scream effortless chic. If only we could see her shoes.

According to www.weather.com, this weekend in Beijing we'll be stuck with slightly cooler temps than the guys and gals at Coachella. Shorts may be less practical, unless paired with furry jackets or padded sweaters. We're envisioning wide-leg pants, John Lennon sunglasses, ankle boots, wraparound headbands, cut-off tanks, eyelet dresses, floppy hats, and layers and layers of bracelets and necklaces.

What to avoid? Clunky heels, skin-tight anything, carefully primped hair and expensive baubles. Remember, you've got to look and feel low-maintenance, while staying true to personal taste. If you've got photos, send 'em to us. We'll see you on the field.

Well this is a fashion festival and it is obvious we want to look adorable and cool. We have to understand that different people have different taste and every one has right to wear what they want. It is music festival and every one will surely want to look different. I have seen many people wearing boardshorts in which they look nice. Every one has different knowledge of dress up and I like the above pictures where people are looking cool. There is a great link between music and fashion it is just that how an individual represent him/herself in that particular look.[/quote/}

In th future, you WILL carry a rhodedendron with you everywhere you go, got that?!? Why? Because you WASTE OXYGEN!!! You tongue-slew all them innocent syllables, instead of simply saying, "Whatever?" Now ain't your sorry butt awash in blood guilt?

Certain millenials on the TBJ staff don't want you to comment on years-old articles. FYI.

Crazy

There are many festivals around the glove. I think this article is best for festival preparation

sad.

Who died and made you king of the zombies?

Burning Man in the 90's was great. As for Glastonbury, you've obviously never been there with that silly comment. Great MUSIC and people didn't care what they wore.

No Badr, it's not allowed at any of them... sadly...

Umm, isn't this an eg of what's killing music? It's not about fashion. Just go, wear whatever, get drunk, dance about, spill beer on yourself, get muddy... and erm what else, oh yeah, appreciate the MUSIC.

It's not about making sure you look like a bohemian-hippy-indie chick/guy who is more connected to nature and the elements than Gandalf and lives and breathes music - when really Monday to Friday you're an uptight city slicker who freaks out when they have to sit on a bare patch of grass or when they don't have a pair of matching socks, and who thinks Rancid refers to gone off cheese.

go home Frau Wong...

What!?!?? Of course people care! They OVER-CARE! kate bosworth and her stylist picked out her outfits for coachella, including her jewelry (in America she has a jewelry line out called JewelMint).

Also, nobody goes to Burning Man except drug addicts. And let's not bring up Kate Moss at Glastonbury.

This is a wonderfully written article by Ms. Wang. I'm looking forward to my first visit to these Spring festivals! As a man of simple tastes and pleasures :), I think I'll have no problem fitting in with this comfy style. Loafers, linen, and lemonade...my inspiration! Hope to see you there!

NO NO NO NO NO!!! You've got it all wrong, the very last thing any self respecting festival goer worries about is fashion! Jeeeez. Sample a weekend at Glastonbury, Glade, Burning Man and Bena Kasim and then you might have an idea of what a festival is actually supposed to be about.... Jimi must be spinning in his grave.
