2011 May 27 Talking Pints: DJ Wordy, Win SOS Tickets and Other Weekend Highlights
If you’ve already read our interview with DJ Wordy, you’ll have seen that his CD launch party is at Tango tonight (May 27) – not Yugong Yishan, as originally scheduled and listed in the May issue of the Beijinger. While we’re at it, another reminder that until further notice, Yugong Yishan is closed to allow for “fire safety measures” to be implemented. If you’ve got a copy of the Beijinger’s May and June issues, remember that all events listed as taking place at Yugong may be canceled – call the venue and check our website for clarification of cancellations and rescheduling. One I can confirm right now is that Yuksek’s show, originally scheduled for June 2 at Yugong, has been moved to June 3 and will take place at Tango.
Next up, the Science of Sounds boys celebrate their Science label’s first birthday at The House on Saturday night (May 28) – to win a place for you plus a friend on the guestlist, tell us:
The word “science” derives from the Latin word for what?
Email your answers to iainshaw@thebeijinger.com with your full name and mobile number (as well as your guest’s details) before 10pm on Friday night.
Back to Friday, and what’s going on? Eddie Lv, Mickey Zhang and Ou Yang play “Infused” at Punk (free, 10pm), Patrick Yu (see our recent interview with Patrick here) and Usami host their “Moonlighting” party at Migas (free, 10pm), Yang Bing goes head-to-head with the Wasabi Sounds team at Mo Lounge, and indie and electronica are swallowed alive at Whale! in School (free, 10pm). There’s also Scrambled, a bass-heavy party at Siif featuring Ekki, Harikiri and others. That’s free and gets going at 10pm.
Into Saturday, and Eddie Lv, Dio and Kora X are up at Mo Lounge, Riviera Events pop some champagne at Scarlett, there’s the Science Label party at The House (RMB 50, 10pm), and Spirit It host their latest cocktail making class at Fez Bar (RMB 160, 6.30-8.30pm) – email bobspirit.it@gmail.com now to see if there are any places left. At the Hilton’s Zeta Bar, Beijing’s Next Top Model will be selected by a panel of esteemed judges – including one from this very publication. For all the details, see our post here. And all day out in Shunyi, there's music with Rynostock at Pomme O'Shea's. Into the early hours, the Champions' League Final between Barcelona and Manchester United kicks off at 2.45am - Paddy's and The Den should draw the biggest crowds. As my boss is a United fan, I think for my own good it'd be better if they win and take the trophy back to Manchester.
Round the weekend off on Sunday afternoon at the launch party for Neon, a new party for the last Sunday of every month this summer that The M Agency is doing in collaboration with DJ Bitesize Buddha. That takes place on the Migas rooftop, it’s free and starts from 3pm. Belgian disco duo Mustang will be rocking the roof. Meanwhile, over at Kokomo, Sundays on Top returns with Patrick Yu in command and burgers on the barbie.
OK, that’s it – have a good weekend.

Fans of a good pint should check out Great Leap Brewing this weekend. Run by an American-German called Carl, his partner Sam and Carl’s wife Liu Fang, they’re a small operation turning out a bunch of craft beers from their base in a hutong just a few hundred meters west off Nanluogu Xiang. There’s not much to look at inside, but all you really want to go for is the beers anyway. At the moment, they have four beers on tap – Cinammon Rock Candy Ale, Honey Ma Blonde, Pale Ale No. 6, and Oatmeal Porter.Talking Pints: The Beijinger Pizza Cup Party, Chinese Wine Triumph, Chronmaster, SOS, Apothecary and Nova Preview

Talking Pints: The James Joyce, Watching the Rugby, Tun and Weekend Nightlife Roundup

Does Beijing need another Irish bar? Somebody obviously thinks so - the guys behind the Paradise CVS liquor store/late-night hangout have taken over the spot that most recently housed the utterly rubbish Swensen's/Prima Taste, and are reworking the space into two venues.
Talking Pints: Black Sun Rising, Box Birthday, Peter Hook, DJ Fu

The Black Sun at Chaoyang Park West Gate is under new, and foreign, management. For many years, this bar has been a decent enough place to stop for a beer, but has always felt like it wasn’t living up to its potential. This is likely to change, as new manager Tom is setting out to reform all manner of the Black Sun’s limitations, starting with installing Western-style toilets.
