2011 Jun 05 North Korea Names China the Happiest

North Korea has released its rating of countries based on happiness, awarding China perfect marks. Where does North Korea place itself and others?

North Korea magnanimously gave away the number one spot and ranked itself second with 98 points out of 100.

Rounding out the top five are Cuba, Iran, and Venezuela.

Getting a dismal 3 happiness points and holding onto last place is the United States, referred to as “the American Empire.”

Re: North Korea Names China the Happiest

This could be posted on quite a few entries as of late so I hate to single this (rather trivial) one out, but for anything unrelated to shopping and drinking in Beijing, all of the Beijinger's "news" is up to a week or more old.

Come on guys. You even link to the original article which was over 10 days ago. Anyone who is interested in this stuff would have seen it already on the myriad of other websites and blogs that picked it up. I'm not expecting on the dot reporting, but after a week why even bother? If you want to cover restaurant reviews and trendy shop tips go for it, you seem to have it down pat so far. But either step up your game on the news front or let it go.

It’s crunch time, folks. As of today, you have just under two weeks to choose, find and execute a smashing Halloween ensemble. Before you start freaking out, turn to our trusty lists from years past (2009 and 2010) of venues to stock up on wigs, masks, fishnet stockings – you name it.

  • Talking Balls: China Says No To Kobe, China Says Yes To Students & Beer Is Good For You

The NBA lockout has been of extreme interest to CBA fans as it means that the Chinese league may see an influx of stars. Shanxi Fenjiu announced that they had a deal in place with Kobe Bryant, which caused yet more frenzy and speculation. That has been put to an end now as the CBA has taken the very sensible decision that players cannot have an opt-out clause to return to the NBA, and that only free agents who are willing to commit to at least a year will be eligible to sign on. The bad news? No Kobe. The good news? Yes to Tracy McGrady, Mike Bibby, Tyson Chandler and 121 other players. The CBA might resemble NBA Jam a little more next year.

Hong Kong-based burger restaurant Shake 'Em Buns is set to open within the next two weeks at China Central Place, next to Shin Kong Place. Take a look at this menu from one of their Hong Kong restaurants to give you a taste of what you might expect (but do be warned that the Beijing menu may not be exactly the same).

It’s no secret that bars (and clubs) are still a fairly new invention in Beijing. Until as recently as the mid-1990s, Hard Rock Cafe was about the only place in town where a mixed drink didn’t mean tea leaves and hot water. Beijingers have traditionally done their serious drinking in restaurants, and most still do.
