2011 Jun 06 Don't be Koi: New Izakaya Disappoints

With the exception of a few tea-based cocktails (RMB 35), the offerings here are pretty mediocre. The Western-influenced sushi rolls (RMB 48-68) with thick sauce and rich condiments could be considered tasty, though certainly not by traditional standards.
The sweet and spicy burdock (RMB 18), accented with soy sauce and white sesame, was a nice beginning. However, the grilled scallops and avocado with cheese (RMB 45) was terribly executed on my visit: withered, stale scallops, raw avocado, and grated cheese that was clumpy and underbaked. The okonomiyaki (RMB 35) was better, but slightly overdosed with cooking oil; the pancake was flavorful, but more pickled ginger was needed to balance out the grease. Similarly, the grilled cod with saikyo miso (RMB 68) would be good value – with less oil.
Standout dishes: Green tea liqueur milk

Kiko: Sushi on Nanluogu Xiang

Izakayas are the tapas bars of Japan, a tie-loosening mix of alcohol and eats in an atmosphere of buzz and banter. It’s fair to say nobody at Kiko has read the brief.
Mister “T”: Kiichiro Asano Is An A-Team Plater

Get Freaky for Hibiki: Modern Japanese in the CBD

The star of the menu here is the scallop grilled with butter sauce (RMB 90) – meaty and fresh, smooth and scrumptious. “Chocolate burger meat” (RMB 45) may sound like a dessert al carne; actually, these are creative croquettes, stuffed with unsweetened dark chocolate sauce.
Nadaman: Summit Wing Sashimi King

Relocating from the China World Hotel to China World Summit Wing has given Nadaman a more contemporary look and a new team of Japanese chefs. Manager Matsuzawa Shu remains, ensuring the restaurant’s offerings – still featuring quality kaiseki sets (RMB 580-1,200 per person) – retain their traditional spirit.
Haru Teppanyaki and Sushi Bar Hits Sanlitun

This elegant Japanese restaurant, a favorite of many Shunyi-residents, has opened a new branch in the heart of Sanlitun. The menu’s emphasis is on capturing the essence of quality ingredients, which in turn means higher prices. Each of the several small private rooms feature a teppanyaki grill as the centerpiece (hence the restaurant’s suitability for group dinners), and regulars give the entertainingly prepared (by a private chef) and artistically presented food high ratings.
